Many years ago I dated a single mom from Barbados. We moved in together and I was the de-facto stepfather to her daughter. Her real dad was semi-involved. He had her one, sometimes two weekends/month. But I was the one that was with her on a daily basis. I played with her, cooked for her, cleaned after her, drove her around, read her bedtime stories, and all that. One of the last incidents in our relationship was when her daughter was being a little brat in school. The teacher called and explained that she was involved in an incident with another girl and was being disrespectful to the teacher. I went to the school to pick her up and on the way home, in the car, I got a little stern with her. I was angry and disappointed and I raised my voice at her. I didn't think I was out of line because she needed to learn some things. When we got home her mom was furious with me. She explained clearly that it was not my place and that disciplining her was between her and her ex. After that, it went downhill. I just felt like I had all the responsibilities of a real father but none of the benefits. Her daughter and her mom would never see me as her real father. At most, I could be the fun uncle but still had to take care and pay for both of them. I am sure there are situations where this arrangement can work but for me, it didn't. I just didn't see the point of it. I decided to end it and look for someone I could start my own family with.

Children born into single parent homes need a village...if the father or mother is not in his or her life, they may have challenges, but they can still be a productive person. If they have real father or mother figures, mentors and caring community members in their lives, they will be just fine and sometimes even outshine those from a two-parent home...The single parent just has to be disciplined and put their children first at all times...

When i first heard him use the term "vetting" regarding men choosing a woman to marry I was so impressed. That is a sign of true intellectualism. It speaks to the process that everyone, men and women, should go through before a serious marriage proposal is offered. Typically that process only applies to one, the man. Men must recognize the need to scrutinize any woman being considered. Vetting also includes family and trusted friends being required to give their stamp of approval, or not. Here in the west we think it's all about us and what we want. Shows hownlittle we value ourselves and our families.
