Not sure anyone will read this four years after the video was posted, but wanted to add a couple of comments having just completed a similar ground level TimberTech deck (13’ x 27’): 1. Great pair of videos-very thorough and you are kind of adorably dorky; good combination for watchability in my opinion 😊. 2. I followed the TimberTech guide for deck building and my framing looked essentially the same as yours with adjustments to fit my specific layout. I went with 12” o.c. joist spacing even though TT allows 16” spacing because I’ve seen too many wavy decks using composite decking and I didn’t want subtle sagging to occur over time since this stuff is expected to last for decades. That said, a bit of waviness is simply inherent when using PVC-based composite decking and that’s one of the tradeoffs for using a product that requires minimal maintenance. 3. PVC-based composite decking is a ton better than it used to be 10 or 15 years ago, but it’s still subject to significantly more expansion and contraction than wood decking (hence the spacing requirements in the installation guidelines). For that reason, I would strongly recommend using the same fastening method on any single board: either face installed fasteners (as you did with the frame boards) OR concealed fasteners as you mostly did with the interior grooved boards. Anchoring the ends of the boards with face installed fasteners (which prevent expansion and contraction in the long direction) and using the concealed fasteners on the rest of the boards (which allow expansion and contraction) will actually contribute to more waviness in the boards. You can probably get away with it in a mild climate such as Seattle, but it will almost certainly create problems in the majority of US climate zones during the hotter months of the year. The one exception is that last board up against the house where you have clips on one side of the board and face installed screws against the house. 4. You can use Trex starter clips on the first grooved board along the outside frame board instead of face screwing; they are compatible with TimberTech boards. 5. I wish I had known about those Camo clips before I did my deck; they look to be SOOOO much easier to use than the TimberTech concealed fasteners that have to be screwed in at a 45 degree angle, which makes it really hard to get consistent board spacing. Having the spacer and fastener guide in a single unit and being able to screw straight down from above would have saved me HOURS of installation time. Thanks for a couple of great videos!

@BYOT Deck looks great.. I build decks for a living and glad to see a video of one being built the proper way.. Have you ever used Hidfast nails? I use them more than the clips and goes a lot faster. One thing I would mention about the cortex screws is to make sure you go straight down so you have a perfect hole for your plugs. If the screw is angled a little your plug doesn't fit great in the hole.. Also if you should happen to have to remove a board you should take the felt off the bit first and replacing the felt the same way you took it off(shiny side in). If you don't you'll leave a ring around your hole that doesn't go away and sticks out like a sore thumb. Also DON'T use a hammer that has a waffle print on it.. You don't want a waffle print on that big stick of butter lol..

Great video and project. I assume you did time-lapse video. Can you tell me what interval you set your camera at? .5 seconds, for example? I want to do a similar recording with a GoPro camera of my deck project for just personal use. Also, I have been looking for which composite decking to use for my upcoming deck replacement project. I rubbed an Azek sample piece across a Timbertech-Azek sample piece (both PVC) and the wire-type grooves of the Timbertech surface made a mark that I could not remove. I tried the heat-gun method but it did not help. The grooves only melted down to get worse. Have you found any scratch problems with your Timbertech-Azek PVC? I am now thinking of going with MoistureShield since it seems much more scratch resistant...but still open for suggestions. Also, I see what looks like a vinyl foot mat at the door. I hear that such mats will leave a mark against the PVC decking. Is this true? Thanks...
@BYOTools4 жыл бұрын
All of my time-lapse videos are done with my iPhone so I don't know what the interval rate is but I also speed up the timelapse in video editing so its even faster haha. @@BYOTools I too was wondering about the spacing and waviness. I think some of the wave was boards that weren't fully fastened, would have loved to see a deck level shot of the finished product. At 300lb I can feel the sag with 16in centers. Been on a few decks recently where the top wood boards were replaced, but joist spacing left as it was. For most it would not be perceptible.
