My name is Jason Cox and I had the privilege and honor of being the Demarcus Kelly's (the soloist) high school choral director. He is such a talented young man and this moment was an incredible experience for both Demarcus and myself. There is a wonderful story that continued beyond this all-state performance that many do not know. I believe Demarcus was a junior when this event took place. Upon graduating from high school, he went on to East Carolina University to sing with renowned ECU Chamber Singers under the direction of Dr. Andrew Crane. Every year, Dr. Crane held a high school leadership conference that brought in high school singers from across that state to sing with the Chamber Singers and work with a guest clinician. His freshman year at ECU, (2 years later) the guest clinician was none other than Dr. Karen Kennedy, and Dr. Crane programmed this piece, "He'll Make a Way." Dr. Kennedy arrived and had no idea that Demarcus was now at ECU as a student. What a surprise it was when she realized that the soloist she had worked with 2 year prior was now a student at ECU and would be singing this wonderful solo again on the program. As a teacher, it was a powerful moment. Thank you Gina Harrison for sharing this video. I watch at least a few times a year. I am thankful for the life of Dr. Karen Kennedy and the many lives she touched. I know she made a difference in mine and the life of Demarcus.

I was so privileged to be there all weekend to watch her work and for our students to participate. It was a breathtaking performance. I think she was one of the most gifted clinicians I've seen with students. My best to you and Demarcus. I hope he is still singing. I hope we all get to soon, as well.

Thank you for posting this. I was so lucky to know, and sing for, Karen Kennedy. It's great to hear her speaking voice again. Terribly sad that she's gone from us.
