I picked up the base model as I do more logic than video, I also didn't pickup the display, although it looked amazing in the store as I have a 27" 4K Dell as well. So far I've been blown away at the performance. I'm happy with the ports, the size, how quite it is and how much space it takes up in my studio. My gaming PC is a full Corsair tower and similar but I have a 2070 and only 16GB of RAM. Excellent video, very real and honest, your sense of excitement is noticeable and sincere! to the note on gaming, honestly it looks like as the years go by, the gulf may close between apple and PC products. Metal 3 looks to be wayyy more compatible with modern AAA games and it looks like apple is starting to take the gaming industry more seriously. if I'm gaming its on a console, but as games become more accessible on apple machines it makes the studio a no-brainer (young Architecture student speaking)

Since Apple does not offer any M1Pro desktop machines, "prosumer" users like me who only occasionally work with video are forced to choose between the much less powerful M1 iMac or Mac Mini and the M1Max Mac Studio. The Apple Studio Display naturally compliments the Mac Studio, but it is expensive and has quirks. It is nice to see a professional use like yourself pairing the Mac Studio with a non-Apple monitor. I'm not clear how many photo/video-quality 4K or 5K non-Apple monitors are available that also offer pivoting to "portrait mode" and have a VESA mount. If it were possible to assembly a package of a great monitor with those abilities with a separate webcam and USB mic, and still cost substantially less than the Apple Studio Display, that would be a major development that could bring down the total cost of a new Mac Studio desk setup.

Instead of trashing $1600 into that Mac Display I would rather get the Sony A90K 42" OLED that's already pretty good and accurate and can review HDR content as well. It's rumored to cost around $1400 so it's something to put in mind. Color calibrate it while at it for even more accurate.

Ok. But I think that it's not faire to compare an old 1070Ti with the 32 core gpu of the M1 Max. Anyway, M1 Max (and Ultra of course) are amazing chips. Imho, actually the PC really wins only if u're involved into 3D graphics (both modelling and rendering) thanks to the brutal force of cards like 3080 or 3090 (also 2080Ti) But for any other task, M1 machines really shine!

I bought the same configuration and I’m wondering if I should have gone with the 64 GB of RAM. What are your thoughts?
@patienceiskey39212 жыл бұрын
Apps currently are not optimized to fully capitalize on the 64gb configuration. Also, the time saved on most projects won’t justify the price gap. Unless your work load is very demanding, a lot of 4-8k rendering or 3D modeling, probably not worth. However, feel free to look back later if the apps are updated.

I seriously do not get the infatuation with the M1 Max Mac Studio. Apple basically took the motherboard of a LAPTOP (Macbook Pro 14, or 16), put it in a case, removed the screen and now calls it a "Studio". Intel at least uses more powerful CPUS in desktops than in laptops, Apple gives the user ZERO additional performance in a "desktop" in exchange for sacrificing mobility (I am putting aside the M1 Ultra MacStudio).
@RunForPeace-hk1cu2 жыл бұрын
You are using PC paradigm to fit into Apple’s paradigm. Much like pc fanbois making an inaccurate statement about the “SSD drive slots” not being upgradeable or swappable. The whole idea behind M1 is power efficiency at highest performance per watt even in the desktop. As for putting laptop chip into desktop, what’s M1 Ultra to you? Pork liver? 🙄 What’s the power envelope of AlderLake desktop? Do you complain about gas prices? You make a power hungry desktop -> noisy fans and terrible power consumption. Also, thermal throttling unless you have massive fans that takes up lots of space on top of noise. Nothing beats Mac Studio in a ultra mini desktop size. You can put it into a knack sack no problem.
@DanielRodriguez-fg5ll2 жыл бұрын
@@RunForPeace-hk1cu thanks but it is not fanboyins.. it is basic physics. what is apple doing with the extra thermal headroom of a "desktop chassis"? Answer: absolutely nothing. Think it this way, both the tiny iPad Air and a 24" iMac, have the same CPU (basically). Lets that sink in for a second. Either Apple is giving a lot of iPad Air owners, or it is basically cheating/being lazy with iMac owners.
@DanielRodriguez-fg5ll2 жыл бұрын
@@RunForPeace-hk1cu I said putting M1 ultra side. I am not disputing Mac Studio in itself, I am just saying, Apple is cheating everyone by not pushing CPUs further in a desktop chassis versus a laptop chassis. Hate Intel all you want, Intel-based manufacturers would not put a laptop CPU in a desktop chassis and expect the world you say "thank you, you are amazing"
@vernearase30442 жыл бұрын
Apple’s designed their CPUs to be waaayy wider than x86 CPUs can be - each Firestorm performance core has eight decoders and can look forward 690 instructions deep into the execution queue, and with multiple redundant arithmetic units and a massive reorder buffer the out-of-order execution unit can run up to eight instructions _simultaneously._ In order for Intel to beat the Firestorm single core speed, they have to up the clocks which increases heat output exponentially - which means bigger beefier coolers exhausting heat into the environment which then has to be pumped out of the house during summertime. The whole Wintel experience is waayyy less efficient which means you’re chewing up power to boost clocks and using massive coolers to cool down the silicon so it doesn’t burn up into useless slag ... and God help you if the cooler fails. Lemme let you in on a secret ... there no mobile or desktop chips - those terms are all marketing illusions put out by chip manufacturers informing the user what kind of machine the chips are targeted at. There _used_ to be some server computers with thicker traces like the old RS/6000s from IBM, but outside of that there is no differentiating factors between mobile and desktop silicon. An x86 desktop chip is simply one which is so inefficient that you won’t have the ability to keep it cool in a laptop chassis.
@ByteReview2 жыл бұрын
For me, I didn't need the portability of a MacBook Pro and one at the same specs costs a fair amount more. Coming from a Risen 7 5800x custom build all I can say is what I've experienced - and the M1 Max is beating it out no problem, laptop chip or not 🤷🏻♂️
