Love these videos. Keep them up. Something to keep in mind is that a non-merged set also includes the bios files in the ROMs zip. It's the only type where it's a self-contained zip file for a particular clone that "just works", with the downfall of it really bloating your hard drive, since now each zip file for every version of the game is much larger. A non-merged set is around double the size of a merged set.

So the "parent" rom files act as the patch onto the "clone" files. & then use the Database to see if you need CHD/BIOS files. son-of-a-

Yes. Basically. The parent rom contains the base software and orignal game. The clones sometimes leave out some of the base code.

An Arcade ROM for MAME, are normally a long list of different roms and exe. 8bit to 16bit games are beyond simple to figure out , no idea if I should just put a zip compress file in my emu handheld

It's a shame with all the technology and advancements with videos games that a console like Playstation couldn't develop a set of these retro arcade games in a single game pack. The rom sites were shut down for copyright reasons when there is no way to legitimately play these games without emulating them. Aside from my rant, great video and explanation on how MAME works.

I have everything on my computer. All of the games boot up fine. The issue that I am having is "insert coin".... no button I push inserts the coin. On my android its just the select button with a controller... Its not working on my windows 11 PC.... no controller or any button on the computer inserts the coin. My controllers work with the other emulators in Launchbox just not Mame. What can I do?

Usually the 1 key inserts a coin and 5 is player 1 start. If that's not working press the tab key to bring up the mame menu and go to the controls section. You should find the insert coin and start button definitions in there.

I guess] -I also tried downloading the latest version of mame in an idea that (it's been a long long time, in my case 20 YEARS, so I assumed; ok they are roms from the 90s (obviously nothing change) but maybe there should be a new version of the emulator with improvements and that take advantage of/or may work better with newer 64bit systems and processors). So, I copied the Roms from my old version to the newer one and they all throw errors of missing parts [And I'm not going to lie even the new versions of MAME feel more clumsy], so in view of the data obtained I think I will continue to get stuck in MAME from 2003 -I got to know the MAME emulator thanks to a birthday gift from my cousin's ex-boyfriend in 2007. It was a cd that he himself burned with the Super pang and Snow bros rom, and the 2003 version of MAME. So yes, practically I have been playing this rom and old version for +15 years (I am very surprised that it still works on Windows 11, because I have a lot of games from the first decade of the 2000s that are a headache to run on windows 10+ and some that even since win 7 they did not work for me at all because they required the 16 bit subsystem) -However thanks to the new version of mame I discovered that apparently there are parts of some uncompressed street fighter roms in the old folder that were not listed in the 2003 mame

Yes. Logically you'd think the ROMs would never change but I think the software is being developed and file formats and contents changed to fit. From games point of view older versions still play the same as new versions (mostly!).

OMG! I have close two 8 years of experience on software development so I have a pretty descent understanding on how directories and libraries work. I have now 2 days trying to play The King Of Fighters on MAME and so far I haven't moved from the place I started, there is just no way MAME would run any game, no matter how many roms or bios I download. Awesome video couldnt of done a better guide. Only thing missing is device files. They are the same as bios files but are a remake of say sound or chips that a series of arcades might have. They are never included in the rom file but can be found in some bios sets.

Make sure you put the ROM files in the correct folder for Mame. They need to have the correct file names so don't rename anything. I'm not sure what else could be wrong.

In earlier versions of Mame not all of the games worked, or they didn't work very well. Newer versions simply give you more titles and better performance. If you're after the later arcade games you'll probably need the later versions of Mame. If you're after older games these have been stable for years. I often use the 2003 version of Mame (0.78 I think) as it's only a 30GB ROM set but gives me all the games up to the mid nineties. I guess newer Mame can also make use of newer hardware but mostly that doesn't really matter as retro arcade games aren't pushing the boundaries of emulation.

Did you put it into the roms folder in the Mame installation folder? Make sure you check the file name against the Arcade Database. If the file name has been changed it won't register.

You need to make sure your Mame ROMs mathch the version of Mame you're using in Retropie. Look at the Libretro core documentation to see what you need. There are a few Mame cores to choose from in RetroArch.

It looks like the rom files are either not in the correct format, or in the correct folder. Make sure you're able to see the various game rom zip files. If you downloaded a full rom set you've probably got a single zip file. Extract once to get to the individual roms

Hi. You'd need to check your monitor manual to see if it has some sort of wake function. Some can turn on when you apply power so you'd just need a single power switch to turn on monitor and Pi.

I know for some of these games the parent is actually a game that came out later for example if you want to play gradius you need to have nemesis which is the parent but gradius is still the original PCB.

The arcade database only lets you see what files you need to make the game work. You'll have to find the actual file downloads elsewhere. Your best bet is to get hold of a complete rom set and pull the files you need out of that.

You'll need to create a blank file with the clone game zip filename - have a look in the Arcade Database for the exact filename you need. Mame will see the blank game file and try to set up the clone version. When it doesn't find the ROM files it will look in the original ROM file and find them there.

Not all games work but some of the NSS should. Maybe try on older version of Mame with matching rom set.

Hi. Pac-man is a clone of Puckman, the original Japanese game. If you can find puckman and then the Midway Pac-man you should get a working set for the original US game. KZbin don't like people opening showing you where to download these ROMs but they are not hard to find. I'm not sure if the ROM dumps need to be formatted in a special way for Mame. There should be some documentation online about it. I don't think it's a straightforward process to convert the raw dumps to a working game as you need to attach the correct emulators etc.

I still use Kawaks. I had to get a new PC and had to "recollect" all my roms though. Having a hard time finding a few that will work on Kawaks. I have roms that work on Kawaks (PC) but wont work on MAME4droid (tablet) and vise vera. I think Kawaks might just need a bios file added to it but I dont know what if any? When I see the CHD file error while using MAME4droid then I will use this method and see if it works for me.

The CHD files can be a problem. Not all ROM sets contain them as they are big files. You'll need to find a ROM download with the CHD files you need.

It should do. All these devices use some version of Mame. Again you'll need to find the file requirements for your version to make sure you've got a matching ROM set.

The Mame ROMs generally stay the same unless a game is being altered or the image improved to get it working better. Or sometimes if changes are made to the emulation code. The actual data is just a dump of the original ROM. Of in doubt try it out. Mostly it will work. If not try to find a newer ROM.

Bytes N Bits I not all mame roms are complete 100% ether, there many sample game that missing there sample sound. good example is Mario Bros. if you compare to NES version to The Mame Arcade version you can see that Arcade version from Mame is missing a the sound chip board because it's was not dump properly even the is playable, also explaining to new commoners about mame is good way to know what your dealing with. also you dont need have every game for every mame roms, I rather stick with parents roms than rather keeping the clones, and Like to aviod Merge and split all together. Because I'm expert dealing trouble shooting with mame Sense 2007 and Im part the Mame World Community, What you did is wonderfully. also Community always suggest to use Standalone Mame rather using Repo or core of mame for Retroarch. But when you're dealing with people that want to use Android Hardware or Raspberry Pi, that issue they don't know how to handle or understand the hardware altogether. Specially the Chinese and Koreans they sell their prebuild hardware Emulator at Amazon with them and always has issue not knowing what their doing with there illegal's sell products

Hi. If you're having problems with the stand alone Mame installation there is a much easier way to get up and running. Have a look at kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3Kpfa2arNiHhs0. This will show you how to install the free version of LaunchBox and set up both Mame and all the retro consoles, etc.

And that’s also why I use mame because it can describe the ROMs offsets which makes reverse engineering for actual arcade hacks, easier. I have several videos where I do arcade hacks on pacman, burger time, donkey kong and outrun. Wow we have very similar channels great little hacks on hard- and software.

The full ROM set download is an easy and reliable way of getting everything to work in one easy step. That's why a lot of people go that route - disk space vs ease of use!

Honestly with all the headaches I've gotten trying to wrap my head around all this stuff, I'd personally prefer to just drop the money on one of those Super Arcade X things or something similar where its already set up and ready to go.

If it's getting confusing just download a full romset and install the whole thing in one go. That will ensure you get it all up and running without any fuss. Or find a fully non merged set and use the individual game files.

The problem is that even those things have mis-matched rom and emulator versions. They simply install whatever the latest EmuElec/Batocera is at the time, containing whatever the latest MAME version happens to be at the time, and keep their ROMs at whatever version they had before. Sometimes they get lucky and most of the games happen to work, e.g. when using the FB Neo MAME variant. But sometimes you end up with an ARCADE section where no single game works at all, with any of the provided MAME variants.

MAME is literally my least favourite emulator.. complicated configuration, too many roms, merge non merge parent clone CHDs too many confusing things, all games work by their own base so you need to set them one by one which makes it even more of an annoyance I only use MAME for Arcade version of Tekken Tag. for others, i use other platform emulators (SNES or PS1) which are more easy and simple to work good thing its only one game so i dont have to deal with every game. if it was not for Tekken Tag Arcade, i would have removed MAME already

Once you've got Mame set up it's not so bad to get games working. A bit of work but worth it if you're into arcade games.

@@BytesNBits Yeah its true. I got Tekken Tag working by your tutorials. You make great tutorials, I appreciate it really. however, MAME games need too much work and multiple files only for 1 game, so i dont really want to do it for all other arcade games. I looked for a complete rom pack and it needed too much space. so I rather play them on other platforms with simple emulators if they are available.

hi im really stuck i have a copy of XenoCrisis_NG_MAME rom but it wont recognised by mame nore with launchbox, any advice would be helpfull i have read the install but still dont work i have copyed what it says. this is what it says (Create a folder or zip file called xenocrisis with the supplied MAME ROM files and then copy the text from the provided neogeo.xml into the neogeo.xml file found in the hash folder inside MAME's root.

it might simply be that you've got the wrong file name. Check the arcade database listing to confirm the file.

Non-merged ROMs are by far the best way to get specific, single games running. As someone who really only cares about 30-50 arcade games, they're always my first choice.
