This is when a defensive holding may be called, straight out of the rulebook: "Contact with the Receiver: If a defender grabs and restricts a receiver, not just making incidental contact, but actually impeding his ability to run his route. This includes grabbing the receiver's jersey with hands or arms, hooking the receiver, or otherwise using their hands or arms to control, redirect or impede his movement. Timing of the Contact: The holding can be called if it happens at or beyond 5 yards from the line of scrimmage or if it’s within 5 yards but continues beyond this area. However, within the first 5 yards from the line of scrimmage, contact that restricts the receiver's movement can sometimes be interpreted as legal defensive contact, but it still might be flagged for holding if it's deemed excessive or if it clearly impedes the receiver's ability to catch a pass." If you look at the receiver's route, this hold from the DB clearly impeded his movement and he was the primary target for the QB. The receiver creates separation between him and the DB, and the DB grabs his jersey as this happens. This was as textbook as holding can get- not egregious, but textbook. It was excessive contact that impeded the receiver's movement. It was the correct call.

Whether it comes to some schools like Miami, Texas, Georgia, or BYU in this instance, the referees have repeatedly inserted themselves into big moments in games in order to effect the outcome one way or another. That holding call against Utah on their 4th down stop when the game was effectively over was literally one of the weakest defensive holding calls I have seen in the entire decades I have watched this sport. Especially because they were pretty much unwilling to call offensive holding for the previous 4 quarters. Whether Utah wasted opportunities or "deserved to win" or not is irrelevant- the *actual* game deciding moment was that holding call the officials pulled out. Doesn't matter how good or bad one team or another played, you don't as a referee insert yourself into a game and decide who wins or loses it. That's bad for the sport, it's bad for competition, and it only serves to make the NCAA more money by keeping teams undefeated.
@williamzame370812 күн бұрын

Hey at least we have no actual losses against bad teams @Alabama @Miami @NotreDame @TexasAM. Okalahoma St and this I would qualify as mid/bad teams but SMU no way. End of the day a good team can lose to someone way worse on a single gameday. Miami barely beat Virginia Tech, California, and Louisville. I think at the end of the day people expect BYU to lose. Most teams don't get the same accountability held towards them. Miami who today was ranked #4 being a prime example, they had a worse strength of schedule, competed relatively the same with their opponents, yet they are held up to #4. Honestly I think Big10, SEC schools are overrated. There are good athletes all over the place. It really comes down to big plays, play calls, and who wants it more.
