Great conversation. This is the first Hermetix podcast I've listened to in the past >6 months.

You should check out the one’s on Egoism, and his appearance on Theory Underground, they’re all very good. I’m personally excited for the upcoming Debord discussion.

Maybe he's friendly to 'grand narratives ' because he's actually a practicing Catholic? He talks a bit about in a recent interview with the Spanish paper El Pais

as vervaeke would say it's the meaning crisis, or as han alludes to, the loss of a narrative. everyone needs something to do, and capitalism does demonstrate growth (w/ the underside of degradation and waste), but what is the point? and we do experience freedom, but it's within the bubble of the neoliberal system, so of course it's always political. as in systems theory, it's about the paradigm; it's about the way we think. by reaching out to others and reflecting (boredom, or 'thinking about thinking') this is how new realizations occur; new awakenings. And as part of this, for example, one may ask, why do we still have racism and nationalism? we still have a ways to go in this human experiment. but in opening up thought, one changes the conditions and premises of the system, and then naturally the political imperatives change as well. otherwise, one can rebel against the system, but one is not sure about what to do in a new one, as our collective vision/consciousness is still underdeveloped.

Interesting what passes for a "thinker"

wonderful discussion, and i was aware of b.c. han, but this brings his universe of thought together. it is the west's obsession w/ freedom, which is a narcissism, that leads eventually to a vacant sorrow. and yes, the thesis of 'other' and friend is the essential balance, of the awareness we live in a society and a long chain of being, the web of life on earth. liberty and responsibility is the ying and yang, and the irony that only through connection do we find true release.

Really enjoyed the discussion. Han forwards some significant ideas and a few timely provocations but his thinking always seems a little light and lacking the interesting connections and moves that we come to appreciate from other contemporaries.

interesting contemporary philosopher; and one that has been obviously influenced by Foucault; as a significant number of his works bear the imprint of a man who sees through the gossamer of modern-day culture to see all of its ugly features: apathy; abulia; and enervation! Looking forward to this episode! RGB-Y4 out!!!

Excellent! Might we some day see an episode on Carlo Michelstaedter, or Albert Caraco? Cheers

Re: the "touch" stuff, no need for contradiction there. It's a reductive error descending from (readings of?) Aristotle that touch is one sense, taste another, etc. within "touch" affective and discriminative touch, for example, have quite different neural pathways, timescales, relations to cognition and affect. He can be right in both of those intuitions.

I was unimpressed with his book on Psychopolitics. Leftist sophistry at its most tedious in my opinion. So much of his writing is a retread of the ideas of Foucalt and his derivatives.

Whilst on the face of it you’re correct…and u are….Foucault does make some valuable points (these may possibly be due to his questionable proclivities as one may say…) as does Derrida….that said with Derrida and Foucault I always got the impression that there were golden threads in the blanket of lies…..
@rossgopicotrain40422 ай бұрын
piggybacking on the works of foucault does not equate to a, 'retread of the ideas of Foucault and his derivatives'; for example, Foucault was focussed on the institutions of control; whereas Han goes a step further by identifying how modern-day 'economics' (i.e., neoliberalism) has effected a 'control society' (viz., quite distinct and different from anything Foucault articulated with his said theory) That is all! RGB-Y4 out!!
