When you grow up in an abusive home, and the abuse lasts a lifetime, it’s a lifelong struggle to forgive. It has been the work of a lifetime, but reaching the goal is priceless. Heavenly Father works miracles. It’s a loooong, hard struggle, but it can be done; have hope. My “trick”, see them as the children they were, when their minds were broken. You can do it.

I grew up in the church in an abusive home. I hated the church and I think I blamed the church. Wanted nothing to do with it. Learn about love and families forever on Sundays but home, all I felt as a child growing up was fear and anger. I’m 43 now. Left the church from 17-38. I still have some anger issues occasionally. Very active in church and serve in the bishopric. It is only because of a miracle in my life at age 15, no less, that I am active. Heavenly Father blessed me with an incredible spiritual experience that forever changed the trajectory of my life. I left church for a while anyhow but I went from feeling suicidal to there’s hope in life and purpose even during the inactivity. I don’t have all the answers, especially for some of the Church history but I do know this is Christ’s church on the Earth with the fullness of the gospel. I know Joseph Smith is a prophet called of God and restored this great Gospel and the priesthood with the help of Angels. I have longed since forgiven my father. Only recently did I realize I needed to forgive my mother who was a victim too. She finally divorced my dad when I was 11. I do love my family and look forward to better relationships on the other side. He passed 6 years ago.

Truman Madsen baptized my father back in 1965 on the day that President Madsen was released from his service as the New England mission president. President Madsen gave his closing talk and my father said that he could not deny the spirit any longer. President Madsen made sure my father's baptism happened that evening. -a very grateful daughter

I have clung to the message of this speech throughout my life and it’s helped me forgive and keep trying to love when it’s hard, to keep a temple recommend even though I often do not understand what I do in there, and to hope for more love and more understanding as the years go by. I had the speech on a cassette tape which is now lost. I’ve heard it on CD but I never saw him delivering it before, nor saw the crowd who originally received it. 👏👏👏

We met him in Augsburg Germany where we served with the 101 Airborne and he held a conference for the Southern Germany area. This speech was held about 10 years after our time in Augsburg. But he did these conferences every year of our own service time. He always was in high demand for speaking engagements all around the church everywhere.

Truman was among some of our most treasured mentors in a spiritual realm at BYU and for many years after! Thank you for posting these. We were present for many of them, but this one was given a couple of years before we got to BYU. :) Our parents were friends with the Madsen family as well.

My grandpa was teaching at BYU during this time and was friends with Truman. I had the privilege of meeting and getting to know his wife who is in my stake in Provo. They're such wonderful, strong, amazing people and examples!

11:38 is about when my very young (at the time) parents started whispering to each other in the audience and you can see them in the middle of the frame. 😊 Looks like my mom was asking my dad a question. @Betty Pearson @Karl Pearson My Grandpa was a professor at BYU during this time. A professor of religion, and Truman and he became good friends. My Grandpa wouldn't speak at these or put his name on the many manuals and literature he wrote for the church's organizations or co-wrote with Truman Madsen, Gerald Lund, and many others. I wish he had, though. I sure miss him.

Is it perhaps a reference to Revelation 11. 8? I am not LDS, but I know that many Christians think Elijah will be one of those two witnesses seen by John in the vision in the book of Revelation.

It is specifically a rabbinical tradition. It is not scriptural. There are a few different beliefs on it from the rabbinical teachings: Elijah, Moses, and Enoch are mentioned because Elijah and Moses called down fire from heaven, as these two prophets are foretold to do, and Enoch has traces of the JST of Genesis 14, I believe, where he was said to set at defiance the armies of nations, also as these two prophets are foretold to do. Rabbinical tradition also states that they will be named David, or descend from David. Rabbinical traditions are generally ancient teachings and can't be relied upon, just as maybe a Gospel Doctrine class may not be 100% right because it is just a commentary on the scriptures. You may note that all three of the ancient prophets mentioned can't be two prophets and are neither named David nor descendants of David. So they aren't all correct. I personally think that these will be modern-day mortals who are given keys to do there things, as the ancient prophets also were. Possibly given to them by the ancient prophets themselves, as Joseph Smith was.

At 10:30 to 11:10 He said our loved ones who have passed on know our thoughts and emotions yet in D&C 6:16 the Lord says only God knows our thoughts? Can I get some clarity on this.

Only God knows our thoughts, but if those who have passed on are allowed to see our doings, they will have a pretty good idea about many of our thoughts. And they may be inspired by the Spirit to understand what we are thinking. The Spirit can give them revelation, and we are part of their stewardship.
