My absolute favorite player to watch as a kid. To this day #24 is still my all time favorite jersey number. Hope he knows how much the BYU faithful love him.

I became a Jeff Chatman fan the first time he stepped on the court for BYU. Great player, great person for a kid still in high school to look up to.

Jeff you are the coolest! Loved you as a Cougar and as a great human being! I got to see you play in person at Santa Clara in the Holiday Tournament that BYU won. Always been a favorite!

The 1987-1988 team with--in no particular order, because they were all quality players--Jeff Chatman, Marty Haws, Michael Smith, Brian Taylor and Andy Toolson had an incredible start to the season. On their way to being 17-0 and ranked #2 in the country, they accomplished the nearly-unheard of feat of sweeping UTEP and New Mexico on the road. Unfortunately, they were never anywhere near the same after losing at UAB--a game that had been scheduled just so Jeff Chatman's family in Alabama could see him play!--and finished 8-5 after starting undefeated, then got bounced unceremoniously from the NCAA Tournament in the second round. But Jeff Chatman was such a great story. For whatever reason, BYU was the only major school to recruit him, so he jumped at the offer to go across the country to a school sponsored by a religion he knew little about. He and Michael Smith were considered the best big man tandem in the country at the time. Smith got drafted in the first round, and Chatman at 6'6" was just a couple of inches in height from being a draft pick as well. I was so happy to see Jeff's son Jordan get recruited to play for BYU, and was really sad to see how things were handled when, because he had taken college-credit courses in high school and graduated with a college associate's degree, he was ready to go to law school after two years at BYU. I may be completely off about this, but I have the feeling that if the current coaching staff had recruited him, they would have found a way to make things work so that he could finish as a BYU Cougar rather than going to Boston College.

I always thought if Jeff were 2-3 inches taller he would have made it to the NBA. He had a tremendous turnaround jump shot. His greatest contribution has been the great example to me and so many others.
