I’ve been a BYU football and basketball fan since the day I walked onto campus in 1974! The first football game I saw in person in Cougar Stadium was when Gifford Nielson, now Mormon General Authority, and third QB on the roster, came off the bench and threw 3 TDs to upset Kansas State! Jim McMahon willed that team to victory! Coach Edward’s let him go for it... I turned that game off and back on 10 times in the 2nd half. I’d get mad and scream at the TV. My wife kept coming down to the basement of our Kearns, UT home to see if I was ok... When Clay Brown, with the best timing I ever saw, came down with that ball in the end zone... I went insane!!! I then ran outside screaming and yelling. I was soon joined by other men in the neighborhood! And other men came out too that had turned the game off when SMU had made it a 20 point game with 5:30 left in the game... Coach Edwards owed that game to McMahon... and several years later Coach Edwards (retired) prided and encouraged Jim to finish his degree! And Jimbo sealed the deal as one of Coach Edwards pule bearers...

I play basketball with Scott Phillips many times over the years. He's an exceptional athlete! The last pass to Clay Brown was incredible, but in my mind Scott Phillips was probably the biggest hero of that game.
