Belisarius is over-rated, tbh. Narses was a superior general. Belisarius disobeyed Justinian's orders and turned Italy into a quagmire with his bad faith towards the Ostrogoths. Narses had to clean up his mess.

Another fun thing about the Hagia Sophia, there are Viking Runes in it. In the 10th century, various Nordic and other northern Europeans (including Russians and Saxons) were hired to be part of the Varangian Guard in Constantinople. They brought their norse culture and language to the Byzantine Empire. Both are pretty faded and hard to read, but the name "Halfdan" is legible. So, we likely are seeing a thousand year old instance of someone writing "Halfdan was here."

Extra Credits I'm curious, how did the ERE/BE lose Rome afterwards? Was it lost during Justinian's reign or afterwards?

Finn Boyle Oh they actually managed to hold on to Rome for a suprisingly long time, for a few centuries actually. They lost hold of it in the 8th century (200 years after Justinian) after some religious controversy about iconoclasm with the pope (putting it mildly) and 2 centuries of deep tension. These tensions were either religious in nature or were related to the emperors being massive jerks, such as when Constans II visited Rome solely to loot it of all wealth and treasure (even stripping the bronze off the roof of the Pantheon which was then a church). Despite losing Rome, the Empire still had nominal claims to the territory until Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the pope in 800 A.D, which severed Romes connections with the empire permanently.

Finn Boyle It's a bit complicated. It started with the iconocastic controversy which was a very convoluted religious controversy about wether Christians should use images or not (I.e whether they should have the same opinion of religious art as Islam). The Pope absolutely refused to have anything to do with these people who vandalized churches and burned images and held a council about excommunicating them. The Emperor responded by confiscating large Papal estates in Italy and giving them over to the patriarch. At the same time the Lombards (a tribe who had been harassing Italy since Justinians reconquest razed the countryside of Rome and somehow managed to get the ERE on it's side. The Pope realized new protectors were needed and went to the King of the Franks to help him out which eventually led to the destruction of the Lombards and the aforementioned coronation of Charlemagne. Yeah, as said very confusing and convoluted, but I hope you understand now.

Seriously you guys aren't going to cover the second half of Justinian reign? Without the second part the whole thing seems like a giant success story. In fact Justinian's reign loses meaning without the second half and the disasters that came afterwards. Come one guys do the second half! Especially since your going to do the first Crusade, people are going to be confused how the Byzantines got to the state they were in.

But wait... if i understand correctly, the part where the Hagia Sophia accidentaly has minerets, was suposed to show how the church burnt down during the Nika riots... but the church that burnt down was nothing like the Hagia Sophia that stands today, it was built during the reign of Theodosius II to replace yet another church that had been burt down due to a riot! I am super glad this trend didnt repeat itself! also your enthusiasm is amazing and addictive :P I've only just discovered this fantastic channel and i'm working my way through the "Extra History: Cronological order" playlists, so as of yet, this whole Wallpole thing really confuses me! xD

Draidis Spoiler alert: The story ends on a real depressing note with the empire at war with all its neighbours, losing most of Italy to a new barbarian people and a plague that wipes out nearly half the world's population. Theodora dies, and Justinian's left a broken man.

It took six years to rebuild our local library. The I-405 and I-605 junction in Seal Beach, CA had construction started six years ago and they're still not finished. (In all seriousness though, the Hagia Sophia had tons of dedicated people and the support of the government, I'd bet, whereas this library and this highway junction were both caught under red tape and lawsuits from angry residents.) Our European history classes considered the Byzantine Empire a shadow of the Roman Empire and always called it the Byzantine Empire. They also called it pathetic. Every single one of them. I learned about leaving soldiers behind with each location you reach playing Risk. I lost because I had thinned out my troops too much.
