Brings back good memories when I was a Marine C-130 pilot back in the early 80’s.

Hey, crazy story, but yeah... that's me in the control tower. I was at MVY from May to October 2010. my buddy found this and shared it with me. It was awesome to see this clip. I now work back in San Diego. Anyways safe flying out there (FI)

@86chanko That is correct. Not an a Assault Landing. Just "Landing Assualt Procedures." We had set the aircraft up for a Assault Landing. The AC wanted to make the 1st available turnoff from the active runway. So she made the appropriate configuration for the plane. We took taxiway Charlie to our parking. The C-130 was approx. 130,000 ilbs and we landed using roughly 2500 feet of runway. Key word, Procedures. Old title was Assault landing at KMVY. Still impressive considering our weight.

Being a C-130 man myself I thought the landing was spot on. Maybe not an actual assault landing but done to perfection non the less. I got many hours at the stick of C-130's in my days back in the 80's and she is a complete joy to fly. Now I work for Lockheed Martin as a quality inspector on the C-130J. I can say I have flown with very few pilots that I did not truest with my life but there is always that few. She for sure is not one of those few.

I spent 4 years as a C-130 mechanic and crew chief and traveled with the aircraft any time it left for a cross country mission. I also spent another 3 or 4 years as a flight engineer on C-130s. THIS WAS A NORMAL LANDING. I HATE CLICK BAIT!!!

Try starting your 180 degree racetrack approach directly above the short dirt airstrip at 8,000 ft, slam er down in no more than a 1400 ft mud and ice hack job for a runway! Those Pilot's used to reverse prop before touchdown on many landing zones in Alaska our Civil Engineer Team Dropped into. Those Pilot's were incredible! No visual, no problem! The Combat Controllers were there to talk them in on a few low visibility landings. Clear Landing Zone and another outside Ft. Wainwright were hard to forget! My favorite was a Full Bird Colonel telling me to hang on, he was going to let the Butter Bar 2nd Lt. take er in for his first landing! That Col. threw that Plane around like no other Pilot I ever saw Crew the Hercibird. Brimfrost '85, I don't think that Full bird dropped in so hot and short since Vietnam! He was loving every minute of it! The 10K all terrain front end loader chained down two feet from me stretching out the suspension was a little unnerving though. Good stuff, builds character! Lol

It is still hard to think of girls flying in todays armed forces. I grew up watching to many John Wayne movies but I will be the first to say this girl shows that they are in deed getting the job done. How about posting some low level work. I live in NE Ala and on some Monday, Tuesday nights they come over my house at what I think is 200 ft, When they do low level, how high? What routes on section charts? I would love to know when so I could get a good pic. Thanks for posting

I served 35 years in the USAF including a tour in Vietnam, am 72 years old, and don't feel the least threatened by females flying mil aircraft. Do a search and watch all female crews flying Airbus A-340s, A-380s, 747s, etc. Maybe the title shouldn't have been "assault" landing but the video was pretty damn good considering he hand-held the video-cam above his head.

Have to agree with Charles Breen, that was a basic approach. I was on plenty of assault landings when I was with the 352nd SOG at Mildenhall in the 90's. Hanging in the troop door looking out the window for tracers or missiles on Shadows in Bosnia-herzegovina. Been there, done that, got the hostile fire pay! 😀

Does not change the fact that the normal landing configuration for a C-130 is 100% flaps, per the flight manual. I didn't make it up, the Lockheed engineers did.
@michaelchristensen68844 жыл бұрын
@@WSKYish might be a difference in the manuals as well, as the NA (NavAir) have several differences than do T.O.'s do. We only had about 6 manuals that we used that were T.O's. I have seen a couple of books that have exact counterparts, and they go about things differently than each other. Especially the Props and Prop control. A couple of variations in the avionics books as well

@Flyingbadgers20012 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you had a rough assault landing or a very bad one? Perhaps you were taking small arms on the Landing zone? Maybe you can expand for us why you were one and done on assault landings. I assure you, the Major did a great job without anyone complaining that her landing was bad. Again we were approx 130k and stoped in 2500ft. Sounds like a pretty good short field landing to me.
@gdholmfirth2 жыл бұрын
@@Flyingbadgers2001 I was a crew chief. The Pilots talked me into going up with them for a practice assault landing. I didn't have to go, but they assured me it would be fun. I rode just behind the crew. We flew our cross wind about even with the end of the field. When we were even with the end of the field the AC turned us up on our left wingtip and we fell. After watching the sky and land rush by my face in such a way that i could not follow it, and what seemed way too late to me, he pulled us out and "Plop" we landed. They sure got a laugh out of my frightened response. They were going to try a few more, but after pleading with them, they let me out first. They had had their fun with me.

Pete Smith key word “procedures” not landing per say, although the pilot does land a 100,000+ lbs aircraft under 3,000 of runway. So yeah, we did set the aircraft up for an assault landing. The pilot did a fantastic job of not having to slam it down in a 500ft assault zone, because Martha’s Vineyard airport doesn’t have one.
