This episode of Air Force Now begins with a transport flight crew flying over South Korea, explaining their mission as part of Military Airlift Command. The rest of the film shows these valiant pilots working in all sorts of weather and tactical conditions to deliver supplies and troops in the Asian theater. The 834th Airlift Command is shown in Saigon, Vietnam with its C-130 aircraft. Beginning at about the 12 minute mark, combat use of the C-130 is shown in Vietnam with aircraft landing under NVA fire. Some of this incredible footage shows air strikes taking place nearby while the C-130s are on the ground in support of operations. Also shown is air-to-ground resupply of forces in Vietnam by parachute, and paratroops making jumps at the 19:00 mark. Some of the interviews in the film include a tough discussion about body bags being shipped home by MAC (18 minute mark). Evacuation of South Vietnamese wounded is shown at the 20 minute mark.
Established at the height of the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War, MAC provided long-range strategic airlift from the United States to Military Airlift Support Squadrons (MASS) located on Pacific Air Forces bases in the Pacific AOR.
By 1968, MAC military and contract transports were hauling 150,000 passengers and 45,000 tons of cargo monthly to and from Southeast Asia. At first, MAC transports to Vietnam landed regularly only at Tan Son Nhut AB, necessitating considerable transshipment within Vietnam by the Common Service Airlift System. New air bases opened at Da Nang AB and Cam Ranh AB in January 1966, and later at Pleiku AB, Bien Hoa AB, and Phu Cat AB, reducing the need for redistribution.
Major unit movements by MAC aircraft from the United States usually required further airlifts to operating areas by in-country transports. Introduction of the C-5 Galaxy transport in the summer of 1970 created new problems of in-country distribution, since C-5 deliveries were massive, and, initially the planes could land only at Cam Ranh Bay. Eventually, however, C-5s could unload at Tan Son Nhut and elsewhere. Primarily, MAC transports carried high-value cargo such as aircraft and equipment parts, while MAC civilian-contract flights transported passengers to and from the combat zone
Undoubtedly the most important development of MAC during the Vietnam War was the use of the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter as an airborne ambulance evacuating casualties out of South Vietnam to hospitals in Japan, the Philippines and the United States. Generally, patients requiring hospitalization for thirty days or more were moved to offshore hospitals; others were sometimes evacuated to keep an empty-bed reserve of fifty percent in Vietnam. Military Airlift Command transports carried the more serious cases from Clark AB to the United States, and, in 1966, began making patient pickups in Vietnam.
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed and built originally by Lockheed, now Lockheed Martin. Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medivac, and cargo transport aircraft. The versatile airframe has found uses in a variety of other roles, including as a gunship (AC-130), for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refueling, maritime patrol, and aerial firefighting. It is now the main tactical airlifter for many military forces worldwide. Over 40 models and variants of the Hercules serve with more than 60 nations.

My dad is the c-130 pilot who appears at 19;43. Captain Bill Ryan. 4 years in theater. Was one of the crews that led the flights out of Ha Noi in 1975. Had 3000 combat hours. He is now 80 living in Branford Ct and owns a lumber yard.

I was with the 374th TAW at CCK, Taiwan, 71-74. FMS/AGE. I had 3 TDYs to the branch office at Tan Son Nhut, RVN. The airplanes I rode down on just came out of the hangar after reconditioning. The airplanes I flew back on were cleared for 1-time ferry flight below 18,000 ft. They were that beat up. This video shows a little of how they got that way. The 374th also ran the Thailand in-country shuttle known as Klong Hopper Airlines. Call sign Klong. Klongs are the drainage ditches and canals in Thailand.

Amazing men and teamwork to fly these machines, especially in combat zones. I’ve jumped from these aircraft in Vietnam and have great respect for C 130s and all of their crew members. Thank you for this great video.

I flew in many of them out of CCK Air Base, i went TDY to Osan Korea for 3 months, and U- Tapou Thailand for 1 Month, remember it well.

Was the crew chief of 641799 at Van Nuys CA, 146th TAW 1986-1990 when it turned over 30,000 hours. Was 43171E master mechanic. Went to more countries in a 130 than the C-141 during the Vietnam war for from 1964-1968. I am now 77 and can recall those years as the best.

The good ole 4-fanned trash can! Gotta love em! Fun fact: a c-130 I worked on around 2005 had Purple Heart from Vietnam from getting so beat up. They eventually retired all the E models a couple years later. It was a privilege to experience an American relic like that.

Great film. I was crew chief on B model C-130's out of Clark AB Philippines. Our birds had the letters QF ,QG and QB on the tail and no wing tanks in this film. The B models also dropped the 10,000 and 15000 pound bombs to make helo landing zones in the jungle. It was called Operation Commando Vault. Good video of the bomb drop on u tube. Type in C-130 dropping BLU-82.

I may be wrong but I believe the teenage loadmaster in the film at the 17-minute mark is named Markwick. In May 1972 he was the only survivor when his C-130 was hit on takeoff out of Kontum when the field came under attack. A year later Markwick was back in the 345th.

When hauling body bags he says you do. not ' look at the names and you try not to think about it . Very true words. But the problem is 50 years later and I can't get them out of my mind and the things I had to do.

I finally found it!!! 28:40, I saw this film while I was in the Air Force in Alaska. That hilly dirt runway landing. I was at a Commander's Call meeting. They show this film landing and someone in the crowd said, "It ain't Edwards..." and brought the house down.

We called this the John Wayne movie because he did the introduction (that was edited out). This is the best description on the C-130 mission in Vietnam! The interviews are aircrews from CCK, AB Taiwan. The footage of the aircraft preforming various missions were from Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines and Taiwan. I know because I was one of them.

Ha That’s how I found it! My dad, Bill Ryan (19:40 & 29:04) told us YEARS AGO that he was in a movie w John Wayne so I spent years looking for him & thanks to Periscope found him a few times!!

Yeah, me too. My last combat mission was summer of '08 and we were still using a few E models, although most missions were in H models by then. I was dual qualified. Those '63 models were some of the best planes the AF ever bought.

Mike Warren I was in a C-130 that landed at dirt strip at Moc Hoa in 1968. It was awesome, dirt flew everywhere when props reversed.

The props really don't help stop the plane much. While it looks impressive, what it really does is allow a lot of dirt to be sucked into the engines, which causes a lot of problems later.

These are excerpts from the Original Movie called "The Way It Is" which was introduced by John Wayne and the Crews were out of CCK. I was there in the 50TAS at the Time, and I know just about everybody in the movie. I was scheduled for a Mission at CCK with the Film Crew but unfortunately, we were weathered out with Ceiling and Vis at 0/0' !!
