A C-17 Globemaster III, attached to the Air Force 535th Airlift Squadron, delivers a payload to the Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN-730) in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands. Underway replenishment sustains the fleet anywhere/anytime. This event was designed to test and evaluate the tactics, techniques, and procedures of U.S. Strategic Command's expeditionary logistics and enhance the overall readiness of our strategic forces.

Can't anyone say something nice anymore? Be thankful we have the equipment we have. As a retired Navy veteran. I wonder how many of the negative comments have come from those who have never served, but always have to Knit Pick due to poor comprehension?

Deliveries like this are made quite often. When you're on a sub or small boy out in the middle of nowhere by yourself (meaning no carrier nearby), then this is how it's done. While on an FF we had repair parts delivered by P-3C a couple of time. The plane drops it near the ship and you send out the motor whale boat to retrieve it.
@johns.7609
@johns.7609 3 жыл бұрын
@Nonya Business actually it does. And you would risk dropping it right on the submarine either. Better to drop it a safe distance.

So it looks like they dropped it within one turning diameter of the sub down sun. I guess that's the easiest way to keep eyes on the package in the water while maneuvering to pick it up.

All of it never gets less amazing. Just imagine 100 years ago . . . . or 50 . . . . perhaps in less than 5, a drone ejected from the C-17 will land on the sub.

Retired AF navigator here with over 1000 hours of air drop experience in C130 and C141 aircraft. Unless they intentionally dropped that bundle way off it was a crappy drop. The pilots rely on GPS for their mission now that navs are gone, and this shows how bad it can get when the systems they rely on can't do the job. Close enough apparently is good enough

@@NM8B I think that's the point. Why would they use a giant ass aircraft (in the future, cuz that's what we're practicing for) to drop a tiny ass package? Why wouldn't they practice with what they would use? It was kind of like practicing delivering a pizza using a dump truck

@@othername1000 What else is in the US inventory that can deliver ANYTHING to the middle of an ocean (or more probably the wrong side of it) in a hurry (oh, and with the navigational accuracy, and drop safety)? C-17 is one of the more efficient breed of transport, and in the scheme of things, the cost is not the issue - winning a war and saving "friendly" lives might be. Would it make you happier if they'd dropped something bigger out the back? (Not sure where they'd store anything big on a boat).
@verdebusterAP

@@andyowens5494 Actually a V-22 would be a better option en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_UH-60_Black_Hawk#/media/File:US_Army_160th_SOAR_deploy_7th_SFG_to_US_submarine.jpg Here is an MH-60 delivering personnel to a sub. The V-22 can do the same The V-22 has much longer range , higher speed and greater payload. In theory, they could deliver a significant amount of cargo to sub on short notice
@andyowens5494
@andyowens5494 3 жыл бұрын
@@verdebusterAP Yeah V22 has a longer range than MH60, but nowhere near a C17's. As said, if you want to deliver something critical across an ocean in time of war, a C17 is going to be your mailman, so you might as well practice with one (as well as all the other tools in the chest). C17 range for special missions, circa 4000 nm, V22 at best 2000 nm (next to no payload and extra fuel onboard). Unmodified ranges 2400 v less than 800 respectively. Don't forget, boats tend to hang about off the coast of your current opposition, not generally near to your handy supply site, so range counts.
