C-47 - Aircraft That Won WWII

The United States needed a reliable aircraft to perform duties such as troop transport, supply transport and medical air lifts. In the end they decided to create a military version of the civilian aircraft the Douglas DC-3. Called the C-47 Skytrain, it would become one of the most important machines of the war with Dwight Eisenhower calling it one of four pieces of equipment which won the war for the allies. In today's video we look at the history of the C-47 aircraft and its impact on WWII.

Yep, the C-47 also used in Vietnam War loaded with each loaded with 3 7.62 NATO Miniguns as gunships.

I saw the C-47 named “That’s All Brother” during the video. That specific plane lead the main paratroop drop on D-Day. 820 planes behind it, 13000 paratroops. It still flies and takes passengers, including skydivers occasionally. It flew to Normandy for the 75th anniversary of D-Day… and planning to go again in 2024 for the 80th anniversary. It lives in San Marcos TX at the Commemorative Air For e Central Texas Wing.

The C-47 also played a vital role in the Vietnam War...as an AC-47 gunship and as an EC-47 Electronic Warfare aircraft.

I just flew on a C-47 this afternoon. It was one that flew on D-Day. Seeing the troops signatures on the cabin walls was stirring indeed. Can't say I didn't weep a little.

@@Jguzman-eo6jw I’m unsure what you mean. More info? My dad has 2k hours as captain of a DC-3c which is a converted c-47 It’s the same plane on Ice Pilots the show. Buffalo airlines LFR. So I have a deeper connection than just my recent flight in the Dakota.

1977. working on Offshore drilling rigs in North Sea. I had the delight and will say privilage to fly in one, on a crew change from Haugasund Norway to Aberdeen. Operated by a tiny one plane charter outfit called "Skyways Intra Jersey". I spoke briefly with the crew. They too were well aware of the history and signifigance of the aircraft and loved flying "A REAL Aeroplane". as they put it. Thanks for the posting.

@2:34 incredible raw footage of some soldiers! In the middle of the screen, one man is holding the collapsed chute of another as they both come down. Maybe they ran into each other and got tangled but woah that looks CLOSE to disaster

No my neighbour flew the C47 in Burma and he loved the reliability of the plane even when he could see the Japanese soldiers trying to shoot him down, the plane got them back
