How many generations does it take to domesticate an animal? Because I could honestly see capybaras being the next pet craze if they were ever domesticated. It's all the fun of having both a guinea pig and a lap dog in one convenient and very chill package.

Some people do own capybaras as pets though they aren't domesticated yet they are wild tame animals but don't get your hopes up they are very hard to take care of

Withink said it all, and I must had it's really not good for them to be pet. They are semi aquatic, and very social being in a house without other friends (Exclude your dog) is terrible for them.

while yes it might be, but what does it actually do to contribute to humanity? that how domestication work it’s easy to breed, easy to manipulate using family hierarchy, doesn’t endanger a person and so on Capybara may only pass as a cute test so it has lower chance to be domesticated

Domestication is not the problem from what I read. The problem is they need a lot of space, a pool and capybara is exotic animal so you'll need to find a vet who has experience treating large rodents like capybaras.

they aren't domesticated, by natural evolution evolved into a idyllic society where they do not hunt or get hunted. Natives considered them as sacred animals and just respected them, not taming or petting, but respected them, same for spanishs and brazilians, so not evolved with predatora (or almost no)
