So what is "RDF"? It looked like fairly useless rubbish. What is done with it?

RDF stands for Refuse Derived Fuel. This fuel is produced from combustible components from all types of Waste. In this instance, construction and demolition waste. The waste is treated and recoverable recyclates removed prior to the material being shredded and in some instanced baled and wrapped for transport. RDF helps to divert waste away from landfill. Materials such as non-recyclable plastic, which would sit in landfill sites for hundreds of years, can instead used in a helpful way to generate renewable heat and power. This makes RDF a great option for companies who are seeking to be sustainable and eco-friendly
