BTW the foam that you dug out of the cuddy was your emergency flotation. With it, the boat would not sink, without it the whole boat would sink to the bottom.

Most people have no clue just how little you need to survive and be happy. I have a one year rule, not used in a year, it has to go. I've lived in a camping trailer located 10 ft. From the Chesapeake Bay, on a 37 FT, Pembroke sport fisherman for 5 years and now live in just a 800 square foot, one bedroom house and could not be happier! I sleep on the couch in the living room because that's what I'm used to.

I had a 2001 22' Cdory cruiser, owned it for 11 years then sold it, got damn near what I paid for it new in its resale, I took care of it. Used it to go out the Saco river in Maine and head approx 20 miles offshore to NW Tantas and fish for sharks, had a blast on that boat. My only compliant was you basically had to hold a seminar about the boat trying to launch, so many people would comment on how cool the boat is and had a million questions, cut into my fishing time :) Great go anywhere boat.

I totally loved this tour on many levels. Robert tirelessly explained in more details than I've ever seen on the systems and their functions. I watched many boat tours and I heard them say these are trim tabs but I never knew there function. I think it is different than boats that have an expensive seakeeper system or maybe not. I've seen boats that have both. But the point that he explained everything percisely. This is my first comprehensive resource I will review freqently because I could listen to him all day because it is easy to see that he and his wife have a wealth of knowledge and insight on boating. This video will always be revelent. I am going to see what other videos they have because I not just learned one thing, but many things. Exellent; excellent; excellent; well done!

How would you compare your 22 to the C-Dory 25’ Cruiser? Do the drawbacks of the larger boat outweigh the benefits (heavier tow, etc..), compared to your 22? If you could do not again, and $ was no issue, would you choose the 25?
@GayeNRobert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark - certainly not an expert in the CD25 - but I'll give you my thoughts when we were looking at both boats. The CD22 is very utilitarian - everything is out in the open - fuel tanks, steering, no holding tanks, etc. We had just sold our Sundowner Pilothouse Tug the same day we signed the contract to buy our CD22 - so, we wanted something small and simple. The fuel tanks for the CD25 (at least when we were looking) were under the cockpit floor - so, maintenance of those tanks would be a bit of work. The tow vehicle would also need to be larger (even though most 1/2 ton trucks now handle the towing. As far as on the water, we'd prefer the smaller for dockage and really can't imagine the ride is much different. If we could no it again and $ money was no issue - we would not choose the 25 - not even a thought. We love the simplicity of our CD22 - I'm sure the CD25 is also simple and great but we love the CD22. But - we also love our Sprinter 144 - so we have no issues with smaller spaces. The bathroom/shower on the CD25 would be nice but not necessary - but desirable for sure. Bottom line - we NEVER get "Big Boat Itis" - smaller the better but functional as a "big boat". Hope that helps. Enjoy your day.

@jimquantic3 жыл бұрын
Really nice, thanks for posting. Trailer boats are hard to beat for so many reasons, the big deal is RANGE. If you put your boat in a slip, your range is only as far as you can safely go from the slip, this way you can trailer across the country--or into Canada or Mexico or what have you.
@GayeNRobert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jmichael - Totally agree. Limitations to all boats for sure, but the Range is a huge deal for us. And the ability to just put the C-Dory on a trailer and store it. In Alaska (did the Inside Passage to Alaska), we just stored the boat on a random trailer that the "Marina" had available. Plus it's a great feeling knowing if you had boat troubles on a long cruise (Great Loop) you could just fly back to the Sprinter/trailer and tow it to your service center of choice or DIY. Thanks for your comment and hope your day is well!

Lot of us really can't afford BRAND NEW boat/motor/trailer packages, same with the new van. But if you shop around, you can get some truly killer deals from all the people who buy this sort of deal--and then let it go when they see they are not up to keeping it up and/or even using the things. I really like that the trailer is dual axel, if you get a flat, you may not even realize it, whereas if you have a blow out on a single axle--you are really hammered and can even have a major crash because of it. Even with a light weight hull, you are way better off with a dual axel trailer. I also see he has a "keel guard", which is great--keeps you from harming the keel if/when you beach the hull.
@GayeNRobert3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. We always say "life is never about the money" - so many ways to get to your dreams - money is just one way. Yeah, towing the boat across country is definitely nice with the dual axle.

@@GayeNRobert My rig is pretty nice too; one place I will try is the Gulf of Mexico, so many types of fish there. Have you ever considered "Liqualube" bearings on the trailer? They have a sight glass and you can see if the lube level is correct at a glance. They are totally superior to grease--90 weight oil bathes the bearings on every turn. You can tow coast to coast and they never het hot. But the big downside if IF they leak--mine never did--but if they leak in transit, you can go from the best--to the worst in a heartbeat. My trailer shop says the KEY is how well they are initially installed, if they are put on perfectly, they should never leak.
@GayeNRobert3 жыл бұрын
When I redid our bearings - I really really wanted to go with the Liqualube solution. It would be so so nice to visually check everything. Not sure why I didn't - maybe price at the time but don't recall. Seems like the ultimate solution. Might be in our future.

I've been on both, that's why we went with the 23. But they are all nice boat within reason. You've very limited in a C-Dory. They have their purpose and as long as you know that they are good boats. They are very basic, I'd say low end really. We have a 2021 23 venture. We like it but already want something much bigger. We are looking at a 32 Targa eventually. But, I do love our C-Dory in good weather and chop no bigger than 3 feet. She is a rough ride at times. She is limited. But within her capabilities I don't think there is a better boat.

Great thing about the size is you can ride in between swells, so easy to trailer, etc... We had 32 for boat prior and would get hammered on waves! It's all in choices! Bottom line is just do it!!

That was a nice video. My question is when you are by yourself on this type of boat, where the helm is inside, if it is windy and the winds are blowing you off dock, how do you get the boat in position to cleat it? I have a pontoon that is like a sail and if I get winds all I have to do is take a half step to the side snd cleat it but on enclosed helms I’d imagine you have to sort of run out the back? Or do you just never do it alone?
@GayeNRobert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nate - good question. Normally both of us our on the boat but if it's only me then I do an aggressive docking with the lines ready. The boat is small, so normally not to much of a worry hitting another boat in the slip. We had a 32ft Nordic Tug before this boat and it was much more of an issue. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!

@@GayeNRobert thank you. I live near the twin ports of Duluth, MN and Superior, WI. I see these boats periodically and it would be a dream if mine to own one. Sometimes I’m by myself and I always thought it may be tough to get it cleated alone. (With any enclosed helm.). I shouldn’t let that stop me because so many boats are this way and people get the job done :). Thanks again!

Thanks for the tour, you guys did a great job. I really enjoyed it. I didn't realize these boats were flat bottomed, but you can see it when you were showing the engines. I bet it is really efficient on gas and gets up on a plane at a slow speed. How bad is it in a chop? I guess you would just slow down as needed and that is that. Lots of people don't like flat bottomed boats, but there are all kinds of benefits and for a cruising planing boat, I bet it works out well. Efficient, gets up on plane easier, can load the boat more, lots of static stability when stopped etc... all good things for cruising.
@GayeNRobert3 жыл бұрын
Hi - Thanks for your comment! Yeah, we love the flat bottom - we've had the boat in the North Channel and the flat bottom allowed us to get into some shallow water - a few times we would jump out of the boat and walk the boat back into areas that no other boat could get to (Great Lakes - no tides). We have both Trim Tabs and PermaTrim (attached directly to each motor) that handles the chop without any problems. But without the trim tabs - the boat does slap quite a bit. We've been in some pretty good sized waves on the great lakes and loved that we could just "zoom" thru the troughs. Agreed - very efficient on gas - we normally cruise Trawler Speeds with just one engine in the water - very good mpg. We took the C-Dory on its own bottom up the inside passage to Alaska and loved just having one engine in the water at a time - fuel stops are limited and quite a bit of wood in the water - so having 2 engines worked great. Thanks for watching and hope your evening is good!

Hi Paul, thanks for your comment. We love our C-DORY 22 and have been surprised at how many other people on KZbin also love C-Dory's. The boat weighs about 4000lbs total. We have towed the boat from Wisconsin to Washington a few times with our F150 (no longer own). The F150 didn't even know the boat was behind - zero issues towing over any passes on that route. Our Sprinter can tow 5000lbs and we have only towed the C-Dory a few miles but with no issue. We pulled the boat from the boat ramp at low tide and no issue. Next spring the plan is to tow the C-Dory to the Midwest and do the Great Loop - so, we'll see how the van handles it but no concern. The F150 was never "taxed" while towing. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
