C is for Circular Breathing! (A-Z of Clarinet)

This week I’m here to talk about circular breathing. This is a really handy technique though, as I explain at the end, I don’t use it all that often!
I’ll run you through the method I use to teach circular breathing that addresses some of the difficulties and misconceptions surrounding the technique. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, hopefully there’s something in this video that’s useful for you!

My favourite part is that little side eye chuckle at 2:46 Great episode, definitely will give this a go!! Would love to see you try circular breathing on an oboe... An old teacher of mine told me it's easier on the oboe and I still don't believe him!

I’d say that circular breathing is about 70% side eye. And your old teacher sounds like a really smart guy…. Maybe I need to do a video of this…

Thx so much for this video. I have been struggling with CB for while. Do you also have a video on proper Articulation? Tonguing well and quickly has been another challenge for me . Thx Tommy F

Thanks Tommy! I’m so glad you found it helpful! I do have a video on articulation - but it’s more to do with my thoughts on how to use articulation than how to do it… down the track I will make another one though. Have a look and let me know what you think :)

Can you practice circular breathing when your setup (mouthpiece only and strong reed) requires strong focused air flow? ...[mouthpiece only for improving one's embouchure] ... Tell us please if you can do it !

Yes absolutely! The resistance provided by the reed and mouthpiece really helps with conserving the air you push out with the cheeks while you breathe in. Good luck with it!!
