This video is brutally underwatched, undercommented and underappreciated. Gratitude is the word and feeling!

I’m new to writing and reading various authorities and professionals and their approaches to story. I haven’t run across many that lay out an actual PROCESS for writing. Truby does. I’ve also been following an Indie author who has a successful YT channel - Abbie Emmons. She also goes into great detail with a process of coming up with a concept, writing, editing and right through to guidance on publishing. These two disagree about three act structure but at the end of the day, they are both advocating hitting specific beats to craft story. Ms Emmons’ motto is “Plot is what happens. STORY is about why what happens MATTERS to the characters and how they are transformed by the plot.” She is an avid plotter so she and Truby have that in common. Her plot beats seem designed to develop the plot out of the (up front) chosen theme, the protagonist’s internal conflict (their desire vs their fear or their flaw) and their misbelief about the world - which is the theme turned on it’s head. When the protagonist has that aha moment, one of the beats, they realize their misbelief is false and that it has affected their life so profoundly it has kept them stuck and unable to live their life fully. At that point the theme is proven - via the protagonist’s journey to get to this point. The beats are executed in a way that is specific to that character and their journey and in that way, the STORY is made unique. There are a possible total of 17 beats in her model with a few of them being optional. The beats are not as specific like the “first kiss” beat in the romance genre. They do not “belong” to any particular genre because they are character driven and tied to the manifestation of the protagonist’s desire, fear and misbelief. The fear and misbelief all tie back to a wound that the protagonist has suffered earlier in their lives before the story started usually. She also leans heavily into the psychological aspects of how we consume story as readers and it informs her process in writing story. That interests me. Truby’s newest book that he took six years to write, The Anatomy of Genre came out in late 2022. I am reading that now and it is ALL about genre specific conventions and beats. According to him, each genre has a specific overall theme that illustrates how to live distinct aspects of our lives. It’s a very interesting way of looking at story and it’s function and meaning for humanity on a grand scale. Instinctively I’m thinking I will be making a hybrid of these two approaches to inform my process of conceptualizing and writing my first story. I have already decided to follow Truby on one of his assertions- that combining more than one genre is the way to go! So I’m reading Anatomy of Story and Anatomy of Genre at the same time. Watching Abbie Emmons’ extensive catalogue of free content and contemplating subscribing to her Patreon. But the free content is generous and I’m taking copious notes! I appreciated this interview. Thanks!

Craig, I appreciated your comment, "There is no middle." That is, story is all sequence toward a final goal.
