Enjoyed this discussion very much. Notice how animated and happy Mr Tsang was in talking about language that he obviously loves. Yes I remember the simplified version of Black Tulip reminisced by him. The text was also used in Singapore in the late 50s.

"Jasper" /'dʒæspə/ is usually pronounced ['dʒæ^ spə] in which the symbol ʌ is used to indicate that the accented syllable is clipped. Also, as /p/ is sandwiched between /s/ and /ə/ in the 2nd syllable, there is no room for /p/ to be aspirated.

en.wikisource.org/wiki/Lays_of_Ancient_Rome/Horatius Then out spake brave Horatius, The Captain of the Gate: "To every man upon this earth Death cometh soon or late. And how can man die better Than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, And the temples of his gods, Jasper remembers this poem which he recited for examination in Form 3 in St Paul's College. I also remember another one also learnt around Form 3 in NT Heung Yee Kuk Secondary School, just for interest:-)
