Locomotives and other machines are referred to as women most likely because of the age old saying "If you treat her right, she'll treat you right". That means several things. Give her a good fire and the correct amount of water int he boiler as well as the correct pressure, she'll give ya a smooth ride. If you do niether, you will get a nasty reaction.
