4:21 Bach/Doebber/Cziffra, Cantabile from Sonata in B minor W. 55/3
8:35 Original version
11:46 Arrangement by Johannes Doebber for two pianos
One of my favorite miniatures, the final movement from C.P.E. Bach's Sonata W.55/3, in 3 different versions. Which version do you prefer? Let me know in a comment!
Here is a link to a PDF of the realization by Cziffra, available at my website: independentpia...

Cziffra‘s Version is the best. Thanks for transcription.

I don't know if it's a coincidence, but I'd rate them in the order you played. Cziffra's arrangement sounds romantic and contemporary, especially bars 37 - 40, so sentimental. Beautiful music, performance, presentation, and presenter!

It is very interesting to know that this piece is an illustration of what CPE Bach's playing like, linked with the development of instruments! But I also wonder the piano forte (or still forte piano?) at that time was significantly different from the modern piano.... (you know I am interested in historical instruments ;-))

The one I don't get at all though is the version that's most widely circulated online (with the doubled third in the opening chord and missing section). It seems to be derived from Von Bulow but I have no idea why they made the harmonic texture worse and left out a section.

I don't think the attributions are quite right here. For some reason, the arrangement Cziffra plays isn't usually attributed to anyone at all, but it's from Hans Von Bulow. Cziffra only makes minor changes from that. Most likely the two piano version is derived via the Von Bulow version, although I can't rule out the possibility that it's the opposite way around. Either way, Cziffra almost certainly used the Von Bulow score.

Hi, thanks for this. I saw references to a Bulow arrangement but I never saw a score that had his name on it… I surmised that the “Rondo Espressivo” that you can find floating around was most likely Bulow’s, but I never saw a direct attribution. Do you have a score with Bulow’s name on it?
