My friend is a bee keeper at Céüze, ‘les Ruchers de Céüze’. Never been around to the cliffs so enjoyed watching the video of the spot.

Beautiful!! Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you got close to some kestrels (you can hear them from 8:00-10:00 in the video- maybe they had a nest nearby?) Beautiful, small falcons that like to nest in cavities, similar to the American kestrel we have in the US. Awesome birds! I love encountering them in the wild when I'm out climbing. Luckily, they are seemingly more tolerant to direct human disturbance/presence on walls than other larger raptors. I worked as a field biologist with American kestrels for 4 years in Utah, and we often entered nests to band adults or nestlings because they are more tolerant compared to other species. If you end up accidentally encountering some on the wall again, best to try and avoid disturbing them, but know they're tough cookies. They might even fly very close to you if you get too close to a nest, which can be startling when you're climbing and not expecting it. I hope someday I can study the interactions of raptors and climbing for a masters degree or PhD. I think it would be awesome to have adaptive management programs that help both climbers and birds (instead of blanket closures or outdated buffer zones). In the past, I've been jump-scared by Peregrine falcons a few times and had to leave a route to come back and climb another time 😂

How's the polish? Last summer I went to one of the older crags in Finale and the polish made climbing pretty un-fun, and I've heard pretty much every sub-8a route in Ceuse is significantly polished (getting worse as the grades get easier).

it's policed for sure, but doesn't really detract from the routes. i.e. it's not going to get any worse there and thankfully the season at Ceuse is only 4-5 months long (being generous here) so the crag doesn't get hammered year round.

Honestly, you are not far off. The older and “easier” stuff is definitely polished at times. If you climb 8a or harder it’s usually in great shape

@@GravityLabz having first climbed there back in the early 2000's, quite a few of the 8a's are polished (but not terribly) also :) Quite a difference from when I first did them and when I was last on some around 2015/2016 even.

Why use so much magnesium ? All grips are white from it.
