OMG! I was in Cesis yesterday! I'm here in Riga for the week. Leaving Monday (but at least for the Latvian independence day celebration Sunday). The castle is too cool. Those candle lanterns are necessary as you wind your way up steep, stone spiral staircases in the dark. Kinda feels dangerous but exciting. And, yes, Cesis is a gloriously beautiful little town, and likewise love that park below the castle (but beware the swan). Have fun.

LOL. Yes, beware the swan! I fed it my favorite traditional Latvian rye bread by "Lāči" and it loved it. As soon as it finished eating a piece I gave it, it would hiss at me to feed it more.

Actually there are two castles in Cesis. The old one from the 13th century and the new one from the 18th century. The park and the gardens were built for the new castle. You can explore both castles there. Probably that park was not a public park back then as it is now and only castle residents and guests went there for walks.

@@jschro124 I can suggest going one day to Ventspils. It is a city on the western coast of Latvia. It looks like it has a nice wooden house old town and a place with many interesting cafes and restaurants to discover. There is also a castle there.

@@jschro124 Loved the church - climbed up the tower - AMAZING view! And I saw that castle park as well (we didn't go into the castle, because we still had lot things to see). Did you get to see the black swans? They have some living in a pond in one of the parks. :)
