That Caruso record is actually a reissue, it has the eccentric groove in the run off in center, these records came about 1923

Because there was no amplification of sound during trials they noticed that the faster the play back speed was the louder the sound. Conversely if the playback speed slowed there was a proportional loss of volume or "throw". So they settled on 78rpm to get sufficient volume and then shuttered the sound down with doors. The credenza's internal bending and lengthening of the output horn, they managed to produce a sort of amplification of its own. Ingenious really. I used to own a large credenze like the one here. I miss all my Victrolas, I had several in the 70s and 80s.

Beautiful video. I would like to visit this museum one day...14:20 Victor - Victrola Credenza, should plays records with a closed lid and 7 feet aparts from the machine for a better sound experience.

The Orthophonic recording, that used the VE stamped in the run off area was in a oval circle until around 1932 or 33, then was in diamond shaped border, indicating new improved recording technicues

For a proper demonstration of the credenza, always close the lid and for goodness sakes, open the doors and put the microphone at that point… Never put the microphone pointing towards the turntable! I own an electric turntable credenza, which is one of the joys of my life. The sound is astounding!
