an idea for a chain driven CVT. this model shown here is just for demonstration purposes, it's too bulky to be practical

I feel like adding another gear on the loose part of the chain to adjust belt tension as the geometry changes would be super helpful for the “jerkiness”.

That's a really good idea. Thanks 👍

Could be done with a gear on an axle or liftarm put under tension by some rubber bands.

Something possibly to account for chain tension is to add another one or those to the driven side, with the driving side one driving the driven side one in a different direction. This way, it will also have a wider range of speeds.

Yeah, that's a good idea
@JjMn10003 ай бұрын
@@magnumsalyer It would also behave more like a typical cvt as when one driving side gets bigger the driven side gets smaller and vise versa.

this is a very interesting mechanism i would have never cime up with it, you could account for changes in chain tension by adding a gear rack that moves the gear at the end of the chain but this would cause otjer issues

Very cool! But doesn't a CVT change gear ratios by itself due to the speed instead of an extra motor adjusting the ratio?
@magnumsalyer8 ай бұрын
Yes, this could do that. But for the sake of keeping it simple for the proof of concept I decided to just have a motor change the ratio

Take another one of the drive wheel, mirror it, turn 60° and double it, makes half as much wobbely

maybe it helps with spacing if the small and big gear get swapped (big gear in the center, small on the outside) - this would allow more adjustable gears on the same adjustment gearing for an overall rounder shape. (i think up to 8 might be possible with that, but 6 is more reasonable) also maybe put the adjustable gears on the other side of the linkage, so your minimum diameter isnt restricted by the triple rod connector, but just by the center rod

"also maybe put the adjustable gears on the other side of the linkage, so your minimum diameter isnt restricted by the triple rod connector, but just by the center rod" I didn't understood about the center rod, can you develop please ?

Woah this is cool… when did LEGO release the 5x7 frames in reddish brown?
@magnumsalyer8 ай бұрын
I don't remember the exact year or set, but I'm pretty sure it is a star wars set. When I was buying the frames on BL the cheapest ones for the quantity I bought were these brown ones (which I kind of regret buying just cause I don't have many other brown technic pieces 😅)
