C.W. Stoneking, is a musician who draws influence from pre-war blues, jazz, 1920s calypso, folklore, and personal experience to produce his original songs. Accompanied with his trusty steel bodied dobro guitar and tenor banjo, or with his brass band, the 'Primitive Horn Orchestra' Stoneking's songs range in style from lonesome field holler blues, to cheeky hokum duets, to full blown 'jungle jazz' epics. C.W. Stoneking's album 'King Hokum' recorded in 2005, contained 11 original songs and highlighted C.W.'s skill as a composer as well as showcasing his tremendous vocal and instrumental style. Conjuring the atmosphere of 1930s Southern blues with Stoneking's unique storytelling style, the backing of his band the Primitive Horn Orchestra, and the use of found sounds and samples. King Hokum is as original and diverse an album as it is an authentic sounding one. 2008 sees the release of C.W. Stoneking's latest album, 'Jungle Blues'. Inspired in part by Stoneking's amazing experience as a survivor of a shipwreck off Africa's West Coast. 'Jungle Blues' is due for release in Australia on October 18th 2008 on King Hokum Records/Shock.

When I first heard the words "I studied evil, I can't deny," followed in the next stanza by "I will relate, the piteous consequence of my mistake, Fallin' slave to passin’ desire" I thought WTF this is superior storytelling. Someone in the comments below made a reference to this song being like the ‘magical realism’ of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I think they pretty much nailed that reference. In the early 1970’s I worked on a building site and befriended an amazing Columbian guy there. We were both barely 19yrs old and travelling with our respective girlfriends. We all became fast friends and he and his lady recommended to us to listen to the brilliant music, and read the great literature, of Columbia particularly Marquez’ *100 Hundred Years Of Solitude.* The title alone was intriguing and yes it is an astonishing piece of literature. Over the years I’ve bought this book many many times as presents for various people. This song conjures up an image of C. W. and his band playing in the gypsy encampment whilst Melquiades the gypsy is demonstrating the properties of a magnet to Jose Arcadio Buendia, the patriarch of the virgin settlement of Macondo, in the opening chapter of 100 Hundred Years Of Solitude. Everything in this song and also in Macondo - both morality tales - goes to sh*t ('mistakes were made' as they say) ….. _but in great style with Nobel prize winning literature, and here, masterful lyrics!_

@@lobopix_ Thank you so much, it means a lot to me, I didnt think that anyone would stumble upon this comment much less know what I'm talking about. But yes, the moment the song came up and I heard the music and the lyrics I was like yup this screams Marques, the ethereal vibe, the melody, the tragic ( one sided) love story. If they ever make one of his books into a movie I would love for this song to feature in the soundtrack, I would love for stonekings entire discography to feature but this song especially.

@@DMp-xp6mj Haven't you heard? Netflix is working with Gabo's 2 sons to make a TV series out of *One Hundred Years of Solitude.* Rumoured to air sometime in 2024. I'd been searching the net for decades to see if anyone was ever going to make a film - or better still an animation which I reckon would better handle 'magical realism' depiction better, methinks - and I came across this TED-Ed animation kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGPdmX-Pr5mjj9E&ab_channel=TED-Ed That made me search further and I came across news about the Netflix deal.

I happened to listen to this song in a music shop in Belgrade, Serbia, of all places. Nobody knew the title of this number or the performer's bane, I thought it was some old black guty way down in New Orleans. I memorised some of the lyrics, I googled a bit and to my surprise I found out : it was this incredibly talented guy from Down Under Luckily, I managed to get all his three albums. Love him, he's great, really great.

"C.W. Stoneking, is a musician who draws influence from pre-war blues, jazz, 1920s calypso, folklore, and personal experience to produce his original songs" ......INFLUENCE!??? ORIGINAL!!!!!??? REALLY? Sounds like calypso to me, sung with that stupid pretend accent that foreigners adopt when they sing any music from the Caribbean. His other music is pure imitation of the music black Americans sang...... over 50 years ago. "Best artist in the world today" ..PLEASE.... another imitator of black culture..like Elvis and all the others.
