Wow, I've seen pictures of that self-portrait before but I've never appreciated its strength till I saw it here. I hope I'll make it to London to see it someday.

Imho Cezanne knew that somethings never change, there is something constant in gestures and landscapes.

No matter the nationality of the critic, or the viewer, the drawing and often other elements of paintings by Cezanne MUST challenge one's sense of rightness: if these are not felt, then one is not looking enough. So early British critics were not 'wrong'. There is also so much more to be said about, for instance, this self portrait, than that it has 'relief' - and so much more than even Roger Fry, who made a close copy of it, could say - or show.
