Join me on a flight down to Perranporth Airfield in Cornwall in the C182. I initially depart VFR before transitioning to IFR over Wales climbing to FL100! This particular Cessna 182S is fully equipped with a new Garmin Glass Cockpit including G3X Touch, G5, GTN 750 and GTN650!

This C182 is absolutely stunning with a beautiful set of avionics. Garmin upgrades are always an absolute must and something any credible group shares should always be looking into for their aircraft where appropriate. Being able to do such detailed approach briefing along with the tools available on SkyDemon is very impressive and vital for good situational awareness. I'm glad to hear you're doing well Ben with lots of commercial flying alongside your GA flying. Hours must really be racking up now!

As a former 172/182 pilot - now 82 - 550 P1 hours - this brought back lots of wonderful memories - living near Land’s End and familiar with both airports. Just a thought - would have liked to have seen the pre-flight checks & engine run-ups in the video - purely from the point of nostalgia- not a criticism - Loved the video !

Haha thanks for the comment, John! Glad it brought back some memories. I try cut down the videos to as short as possible without losing context, all the pre-take off checks usually saves a good few minutes.

Great video and I like the commentary and insights. Could tell me what kneeboard you use? It seems to combine a clipboard as well as it holds the iPad mini? I did not like the kneeboards for the iPad mini so far especially how they hold the ipad and yours looks quite different than the ones I have seen. Keep up the great work. I can see that you have 10000 feet set for wpt LUFTU and 4000' for PLYMO. none for the other wpt's. Is it for situational awareness for you, or do you use vertical navigation (missed that part in the video). I normally don't have much luck using the Vnav feature of the GFC500. Nice video, especially the parts where you include you considerations, use of avionics, ATC etc. great stuff.

Interesting stuff. As someone who flies a very similar C182 I was a bit surprised by your fuel settings though. At one point I saw 15 gallons per hour in the cruise at FL100 (for a TAS of 146 knots) which seems incredibly high - not to mention incredibly expensive! By comparison we fly the same engine at approx 10.2 gph at FL100 for about 133 knots TAS (depending on conditions of the day). And we could probably comfortably lean even further from peak. So Ben I'm curious, why do you fly so rich of peak? You've got the engine data monitor there to lean, so it's not a big job. It's an awful waste of fuel for not much speed gain, plus it dirties up the engine and spews out more exhaust. At today's AVGAS rates you could be saving £40 plus per hour easily (that's eighty quid on this one trip), while only taking a few minutes longer to get to your destination. Isn't that a win-win situation?
@PlaneOldBen
@PlaneOldBen Жыл бұрын
One of the CHT temperatures gauges is potentially over-reading by 20-40 degrees so flew it rich of peak to keep within limits hence the higher fuel burn. Normally we achieve 12/13gph at the higher power settings - it’s being looked into at the annual end of the year.
@stephenwalker3072
@stephenwalker3072 Жыл бұрын
@@PlaneOldBen Ah OK. Of course you can achieve lower CHTs by going the other way, lean of peak. We had a high CHT on cylinder 2 and by leaning to 10.5 gph or less on 22/2300 the temp came down plenty. Seems to me you pour way too much expensive fuel into your engine for very little performance gain - but what the hell, I stlll enjoy your videos!

I spent 4 years based at RAF St Mawgan, now Newquay Airport, the correct pronunciation of St Austell is “Snozal”. If you pronounce it St AustEll the locals will know you as an “Emmit” or a “Grockle” aka a tourist! By the way, another great vid.

Does the G3X allow QFE? It's not allowed on the GI275. Apologies, I'm a pedant on this since as a pilot community we have started to put a reliance on this equipment in GA but are not always reading the manuals and system limitations.
@PlaneOldBen
@PlaneOldBen Жыл бұрын
I don’t really understand how you can’t set QFE to be honest! You can set QFE on an ancient analog altimeter so why not on the G3X? It would be no different to landing on a QNH.
@whiskeybravoaviation
@whiskeybravoaviation Жыл бұрын
@@PlaneOldBen from the Pilots Guide of the GI275. Suspect it relates to terrain awareness but they don't really elaborate. WARNING: Do not use a QFE altimeter setting with this system. System functions will not operate properly with a QFE altimeter setting. Use only a QNH altimeter setting for height above mean sea level, or the standard pressure setting, as applicable.

If the cloud base was low, would you then have had to file an ifr flight plan for this route? Or could you just fly this route with ifr rules?
@PlaneOldBen
@PlaneOldBen Жыл бұрын
The weather was good enough for a VFR departure and recovery, if the cloudbase was lower near Newquay I’d have done and ILS for a cloud break or then diverted and landed there.

@@PlaneOldBen so if on departure the cloud base was low, and you had to take off ifr rules, what would be the protocol then? Just get a clearance from ATC without having to file?

Great video. Just a question of interest, when you flew to fl100 did you have to fly ifr as you flew through clouds? And if so did you have to file a flight plan to do so? Was it classed an ifr flight? Thanks in advance

It was IFR en-route there was no flight plan requirement as I didn’t need to go in the airways as it would’ve taken longer.
