C3 Corvette Side Pipes Install Part 2 - Installing Headers + First Start!

Part 2 of installing the side pipes on my corvette. In this video I remove the ac compressor, the alternator, some emission stuff, and the z-bar to make room for the headers. I also managed to separate both headers from the side pipes that they have been stuck to for the last 20+ years.
This was day 2 of attempting to remove the stuck driver-side header and it was stuck on there. No amount of penetrating fluid or heat would break the rust off. So I had to resort to cutting it off...
First start at the end with the side pipe headers :) I'll admit... a little too loud haha

I'm rebiulding my 81 vette I found sitting under a tree for a few years. It's was bad shape when I got it, but now runs and moves on its own. Done alot to it, rebuilt the rearend complete, new tranny, got rid of the computer controlled carb and distributor. Got rid of all the egr stuff. Working on rebuilding the front end now, new everything. But I still got along ways to go.

@@bluesxt just back checked you channel. 79. . Very cool. My avatar picture is my 86 indy pace car. My 81 is coming along. I also have a 63 Z06 fuelie, a 70 427 big block ragtop, and a 72 LT-1 convertible. Also have a 73 roadrunner I got to trade for a C2 ragtop if I can find one.

Bro thanks putting pipes on mine. The car idles high on cold start until it warms up. She’s an old Corvette.

Your choke is at higher off idle while engine warms to temp Two things happen Choke shutter held closed until engine starts with vacume to pull the choke pullout diaphran. This sets high idle. Second, the black cover on right hand side of the carb holds a heatsensitive spring that opens with heat via a small tube from the hot port of the intake manifold exhaust crossover.

High idle = vacuum leak. I imagine you can adapt a Super Trap tip to it. Look a lot like a winged sprint car exhaust.

Don't know how I missed part one but love it! I plan on side pipes for my 80 after I finish up my drivetrain and suspension upgrades

Do you mention min height or clearance under the car to install the headers?

I did not. I believe I put my corvette up in the air on 6 ton jack stands which gave me plenty of room to install the headers

So I'm at the point to make a decision, side mount or long tube, now after all your work was it worth doing? How do you feel about it now?

Definitely worth it. But I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to put side pipes on this car the moment I got it

You will get tired of loud exhaust

Very true. Fortunately once I installed the side pipes to the headers that tamed the sound down due to whatever muffler baffles were previously installed in them.
