Good morning. I have a question. When you do the bleach treatment, do you do it before or after the 12 hour soak? Thank you.
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage Жыл бұрын
I do it after the soak so that particles can lift off during the soak and removed during the rinsing which is done a couple times during the soak. I also have moved down to a 6 to 8 hour soak. Critical to bleach treatment is two minutes of shaking followed by thorough rinsing. I'm telling you (and others) that bleach isn't that bad if you respect it. For example, I regularly soak my feet in straight household bleach (5.25%) for 2 minutes followed by a wash. The reason I do that is to remove the "black" off the bottoms of my feet and get the dirt from between my toenails 'cause I wear garden flips all day long and am out doing stuff outside much of the day. The plus is it brightens my toenails significantly. No burning, no peeling of skin, and no issues to date with this practice which I heard from a doctor. The active ingredient in Clorox bleach is sodium hypochlorite, a derivative of salt. Bleach begins and ends its life as a mixture of salt and water.
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage Жыл бұрын
I should tell you the bleach treatment I use now which is in the latest book. It's different. Soak 8 hours, add a bleach to water mix of 1:4 (1 part household bleach:4 parts water), add sunflower seeds and solution to a container with lid, and shake for 2 minutes timed. After those 2 minutes, rinse thoroughly then tray up. Sprouting lids on mason jars are what I use. I have a plastic solid lid for shaking and a "holed" sprouting lid for the rinsing.

You harvest your micro green's before the nutrients run out 8-10days the seeds gave the plant all it needed granted if you have additional nutrients they might soak them up. ie Hydro water, Aquaponics water, or soil etc.

Looks like it would be interesting to see one tray with nutrient and one without to see the difference? Side by side comparison with same seeds, same soak time, same rinsing schedule, etc. Have you done that to see if the nutrient is adding anything to the result? I would love to see that if you could.

Mind blown with this game changer no soil method. Using soil takes a huge amount of time, buying, storing, sifting, mixing (tree compost, coconut coir, vermiculite), filling trays, recycling soil from harvested trays. The most I got from a 1020 tray was with accidental rainwater leaving the tray uncovered when it rained. I grow outdoors only. That was 18ounces. Normal harvest is about 12oz. You got FIVE POUNDS in one tray! That's so inspiring. I don't have a way to do an outdoor setup with humidity control, etc...Just a covered shade and open sun spot. I've tried soil less before and the seeds developed little unhealthy roots, then shriveled up and died. More watering just made them mold and rot. It may not be possible this soil free method, with an outdoor grow system. Any thoughts would be appreciated : )

I completed this grow, but I only got 3 1/2 pounds of yield, which I think might be because I had a less than optimum seed lot. Regardless, that was an awful lot of yield… certainly much more than I usually get even with two trays. But the best thing was that there was not the slightest hint of mold, or root rot, or anything like that. The whole grow was as clean as a whistle. Nothing had to be thrown away. because I had a bad seed batch on the first Grow, I started a second grow about five days into the first grow with fresh seeds and it’s doing fan-freaking-tastic. I have a feeling the second grow might have a better bigger, yield. You’re a genius.! it only took me five years to catch up to you. 😊

i agree completely! if the seed pod was all the baby plant needed, it would have no reason to put down root or grow the true leaves. I've always believed the seed carried enough energy to get the main root started. I've never agreed with anyone who claimed that would be all they need until harvesting sprouts. Enjoyed your videos.

You bet. I agree, the seed doesn't offer anything other than a jump start. The roots, finding nutrient, is the machine.

I agree, my experience indicates that it depends highly on at what time you harvest. Up to first set of true leaves no additional nutrients needed, however if growing beyond first true leaves nutrients are certainly benificial. This guy does great videos doesn't he?

Many of those seeds falling from the upside down rinse are unsprouted seed falling from the media surface. If you harvest and then continue to water you will get second wave of sunflower! I usually get three waves from each planting! Nicely done video!
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage 6 жыл бұрын
There are some that are immature (1-2% maybe), but most of it are husks. Once I cut the stem of a sunflower, it can't grow back because I cut below the cotyledon leaves. Also, once cut, the plants cut (98%) will begin to die off and would cause a huge issue by itself while rotting. This has been my experience. Are you saying Sunflower stems cut will sprout additional leaves? If you have a video showing what you're talking about, I would love to watch it Michael. That would add so much for me. Thanks!

Wow! Great results and that root "mat" was super cool to see! I wish I knew more about hydroponics, as well as knowing the least expensive, yet the healthiest way to grow microgreens. I REALLY want to begin delving into growing them, but just so uncertain as to the best method to use. I will have to begin by growing them indoors, as it is still pretty cold here in Colorado. I have actually contacted a few microgreen farmers here in Colorado requesting a visit to their operation, but no one has replied. Perhaps they fear I will try to "cut into" their market. Only, I live so far from them, I couldn't if I wanted to. Thank you for sharing all of this! Much appreciated!

WOW! So was it about a pound of sunflower seeds and you yielded five pounds of edible produce and another couple pounds of roots to be used for animals to eat or to add to compost. Pretty incredible!!!! My biggest concern is how in the world I’ll be able to clean them without a hose and without an outdoor environment to hose them off. So I’m wondering if just the pressure from a kitchen tap would work well enough? I don’t even have one of those nice sink hoses like a lot of the new homes have, I live in an apartment with standard small kitchen sink with regular taps. 🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦

you mentioned soaking seeds with bleech, is that required or just something you do as a preventative?
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage 5 жыл бұрын
The only microgreen I soak with bleach is sunflowers. The rest I don't have to. Sunflowers are the most prone to severe mold and the spores are on the seeds when they're shipped. Sometimes a batch won't have it as bad, but it's simple to treat every grow. 20:1 water:bleach for 30 minutes to 2 hours, then rinse and soak for the remaining 12 hours. Prevention is the key to controlling disease and fungus. I talk about it in my upcoming book. Some soaks and the antifungals are part of prevention along with sanitizing all the grow stuff.

Hey Shawn. I don't hardly ever get it with the way I grow now. This video was nearly 2 years ago and I've got it pretty much down pat. So much so I wrote a book on how to do what I do. I don't top water. With sunflowers, there are 2 rinses in the first few days of the grow and that's because sunflowers are one of the worst for fungus. These rinses are not for watering. They're for rinsing debris from rotting hulls and the fungus from that rotting. I know, it may sound confusing, but I got sunnies down pat.

@C3Voyage 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon! During those grows, I had LED lights on 6-9a, 10-1p, 2-5p, and 6-8p if I remember correctly. That's what I did for all my winter grows so I suspect it was the same for micros. I'm going to pick up micros again fairly soon. I want to expand on the no-medium methods.
@simoncooper8272
@simoncooper8272 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brent although the question I asked was how many hours in the light? The "photo period" once uncovered do you use 24 hours with the lights on? Do you use 18 hours on 6 off? Or do you use 12 hours on and 12 hours off? I'm using fluorescent lights they have always been reliable and run nice and cool, I also have a dark chamber tent which frees me up from black out domes and moisture issues I can do multiple levels on shelves inside it using styrofoam and wieght on the trays, Living here in Gibraltar it has proven very difficult to source the bootstrap farmer trays you use some have to compromise but seems to be working great, we have over the last 7 yrs grown organically and so aquaponic feed system is what we're using for nutrients if i feel they need them! I've enjoyed growing hydroponics for many years previously which is why I like the system I'm used to working with water! And the benifits of no medium are too many to rant on about! Thankyou for your videos I'm still trying to find time to see your other videos apart from the microgreens but that is where I found you, keep up the good work Brent!
@C3Voyage

Sorry Simon, I thought giving you the exact hours would be really specific. With LED lights, you have to give them rest periods so I don't run them continuously for 12 hours for example. If I were using fluorescent lighting or LEDs without a cooling period, I would run typical summer daylight hours 13 hours on from 7am to 8pm. As stated above, my LED lights run 6am to 8pm with 3 hours off for the LED lighting to cool. Specifically, that's 11 hours daily of LED lights. It's been fun doing the microgreen thing. :O)

Ah, I hear you. Makes sense in some areas. Now, the rinses are down to less than a potty flush amount of water only 2 times. Plus, the way they grow, there is significant water savings over top-down watering. It's a good concern to have.

Plants have to have certain nutrients or they won't grow. There is nothing cleaner than hydroponics. It's almost a sterile way to grow. Aquaponics is based on fish waste (feeces/poop) and that has to be processed by bacteria for plants to utilize as I understand it. Even regular ground gardening, people use manure (feeces/poop), ground animal parts (fish and bone meal), and of course rotted plant waste (compost). A ground garden is full of fungus and bacteria. In fact, it's necessary to help convert to nutrients for the plants to utilize. I don't think there's anything wrong with aquaponics if done right, or regular gardening of course, but it's not healthier. There are papers I've read where hydroponics is healthier. Here's a "neutral" article that talks about comparing soil and hydro: abundancenc.org/is-hydroponic-food-as-healthy-as-traditional-soil-grown-food/

Great video. The 32 ounces of seeds used here, I presume that's 32 ounces of soaked, swollen seeds, not 32 ounces of dry seed that you then soaked? If so, do you recall the weight/volume of the dry seed used to get the 32 ounces of soaked seed? Thanks
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage 5 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you asked. It gives me a chance to be more accurate in my reply now that I'm doing another grow. So, I measured two solo cups full of dry seeds. Each cup is 16 oz so I said 32 ounces because of that. Two solo cups actually equates to 400 grams or 14 ounces roughly, dry seed. No wet seed weights.

Hi. I really enjoy your videos. I am new to growing MG and have a couple questions. I love that you are growing these with no substrate but I wonder if you think you end up using more seed than if you were to use substrate and if so, does it give higher yield or not? Secondly, why do you weight the lids down? other farmers I see "float" the foam lids with toothpicks to just keep humidity in. Im not sure I understand what the weight is for? thanks and keep the vids coming. BTW, I read in several places that it was not possible to grow sunflower hydroponically and then I saw your vids and I am totally going to grow some now.
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! More seed = more plants = more product = more weight. I guess you could compare what I put in a flat compared to others and then compare the weights of mine to others. Weighting the lids in the beginning equals more uniform growth upwards and it promotes resistance so that roots can go downwards and establish themselves instead of lifting other plants up. Essentially, I feel like it resembles the resistance a seed normally goes through with soil. I'm new to this MG thing basically just doing it for a few months, but I'll get back into it this winter I imagine for more types of grows as well. Thanks for watching Boyce.

Brent, you have my favorite KZbin channel! Thanks for all your content! I have several questions and I would love to hear from you. I see you use LEDs. Do you prefer LED to t5 lighting? What brand lights do you use? You get incredible yields without mold issues, do you have fans pointed directly at your trays? Do you have temperature and humidity set to certain amounts in your grow room? In the radish video you used shade cloth because you didn't have the blacked out humidity dome yet. Do you always use the blacked out dome now? Or do you still use shade cloth for radish? Sorry if that is too many questions! Have a great day and thanks for making videos.
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Colin! Thanks! I prefer LEDs to other forms of lighting, yes, mostly due to cost savings and lack of heat. I buy LEDs based on the price, quality of build, and comments quite frankly in Amazon. I've bought Dimgogo 1000 triple chips, Bestva 1000 double chips, and Viparspectra 300s. I have one overhead fan in an 8' x 12' room on med-high. I grew those MGs in a heated, thermostatlically controlled room of about 80 median temp. 65 at night and up to 85 a few times with lots of sun. There abouts. I have a cheap dehumidifier, 1.5 liter to keep humidity down. I use both the shade cloth and blackout dome. When doing bulk grows, I'll change to shade cloth when the sprouts are difficult to stuff under the dome and when I want less humidity. So, the first few days dome, then shade cloth. I'm of the mind that darkness increases legginess so I want to take advantage of that. At the same time, photosynthesis is important to kick in growth so I layer shade cloth over time more to less.

Thanks so much! I just have 2 more questions if that is ok. Do you pH balance your water and nutrient solution? Approximately how far are the top of your microgreens from your LED light? I have learned so much from your videos, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions. Thanks and have a great day!
@C3Voyage
@C3Voyage 6 жыл бұрын
I ensure my nutrient is PH balanced. A long time ago, I mixed Masterblend with my tap water, which is 50ppms. What I ended up with was 5.8 ph which is perfect for me. Over the years, I have checked the ph regularly and it's always near 6.0. So, I don't have to add PH up or down. LEDs have an effective rating on how far away from the plants you should be. I use the minimum recommended level per the LED I'm using.

Thanks. Link to Yucca? Is GSI the same as GSE? I have been using GSE for a couple years in my "Do it all" mix for the big greenhouse. It's a great addition I think. I think your mix sounds great and I bet it works great too. :O) With a dense grow, the additional step of adding weight is minimal form of insurance I think. Otherwise, I don't do weight as mentioned in the Q&A. Appreciate the sharing and suggestions, honestly.

Check out NPK Industries: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3Wnh2mHl7KhZpI I got mine at the local hydroponics store- Hydroponic Connection in San Francisco. A quart will last a long time. $15-20 or so.

Sorry, I meant a link showing product or examples of how to mix Yucca where it will allow oil and water to emulsify. I already mix organics into hydroponics. I don't have an interest in this part. If you give me the brand of Yucca you use, I can research the brand and have it shipped. Also could you explain how you much product you use to mix oils with water. Thanks Tango!

I don't think yucca will emulsify oil. As I recall you are using Neem oil, so you may have to continue the Dawn. Health food stores may have a non-petroleum-based dishwashing soap that would do the job. I meant GSE, not GSI. Fat finger! Look at this: www.amazon.com/Puracy-Natural-Liquid-Sulfate-Free-Detergent/dp/B00IS9DKBG?th=1

All good. I did read that an extract of Yucca Saponin can act as an emulsifier. I did find a product that had some in it. www.arbico-organics.com/product/2702/wsda-registered-products?gclid=Cj0KCQjwrLXXBRCXARIsAIttmROgDfl2rgTrjYN5Q75ND4XhAL6MLdzYYvKNGHOm4CJ_6oa-zuaGinQaAtq_EALw_wcB Seems interesting.
