I just ordered the Sony XAV-AX6000 as well. It is a great head unit (I have one installed in my Subaru Impreza) that connects wired and wirelessly to both CarPlay and Android Auto. I like having both options just in case I ever decide to purchase an Android device, or if a passenger with an Android or Apple device wishes to be DJ for the trip. The more options the better. Plus it is a Sony so I know I am getting a quality unit. For only $599 you can't beat it.

Thanks for posting this. I recently installed a double din stereo in my 96 with the non-Bose radio. It was hard enough WITHOUT recording myself. 94-96 had the airbag on the passenger side, so "receiver" behind passenger seat. my seat rails did not have those covers, on either side. mine is a one option (power driver's seat) base coupe though. you don't need to remove the hatch doors to access the cargo compartment, but it helps. I ran my metra harness up the passenger sill under the carpet and then up to the kick panel and over to the center console. I put my microphone at the lower corner of the dash next to the center console. Works good. I put my GPS antenna on top of the idiot light box. It works good too. I also replaced all my speakers but used the stock wires (hooked up to the metra harness). I even got speaker harness adapters so I didn't have to cut speaker wires. I wanted to install in such a way that I, or the next owner (if there ever is one) can just yoink out the modern stereo and put the old stuff back in. My head unit has wireless Android Auto which is nice, but annoying, because it doesn't take "no" for an answer. You better want AA or you'll have to disable it on the phone. I also ran my USB wire to the armrest compartment where it's hooked up to a small thumb drive with mp3s on it. I put a switch there to turn the antenna off so it doesn't extend unless I need to listen to AM/FM radio - which I never do. I was a little worried about losing the "classic charm" of the stock stuff but I really like having the modern radio now. Now what am I going to do with all these cassette tapes I made?

Nice, sounds like a good install. Where did you source your speak harness adapters from? I'm thinking about either replacing the amps in the Bose speakers or getting new speakers altogether and I like your idea of keeping the original wiring in place should someone want to go back to the bose speakers. Did you use your existing speaker enclosures?

@@TrentonCherco - I got them on Amazon. They were like $8 a pair. you could make your own adapters but these make it nice and neat. I used the stock enclosures with no mods/new holes.

Im planning on getting a kenwood dmx958xr as well as 4 new rockford fosgate speakers, what should i install first?

If you can do both at the same time that will probably be easiest. If not, do stereo first, then come back and install the speakers second.

@@TrentonCherco amazing, thank you. Do you have any videos on how to replace all 4 speakers? I have a convertible with the hardtop option, is It pretty straightforward for the speakers or is it tedious like the stereo?

I've yet to conquer the speakers but I think there are some videos on KZbin with guidance on that.

Did you have an extra set of wires that didn’t plug into the metra harness behind the seat?

There was at least one wire for the radio antenna, but I didn't install that. I think it was 3 main connections into the Bose CDM box behind the seat.

Are you having any issues with this unit? Skipping, navigation? I’m going to be using Apple Play and am hoping it connects consistently

No, have not had any issues with the unit. Very satisfied with it.

Can you tell me what you plugged into the big connector behind the passenger seat. Did you unplug them from the tuner

Yes. The speaker wires that are currently getting plugged into the tuner/CDM get unplugged and then plugged in to your Mektra harness that is running back there from the front head unit. From there you can remove the old CDM/tuner box.

One other thing. I received my non bose 70-1856 harness and noticed there is no illumination or dimmer leads. It mentions them on the packaging. Do they exist behind the radio? What did you do?

I don't think the Metra harness has anything for dimming or illumination - just audio and power. I'm guessing those will have to be wired directly to your head unit?
