I think where you originally ran the hose was better just from a engine heat standpoint.

Dumb question… exactly what is the purpose of of a catch can and how does it work? And is there maintenance to do?

Gases and oil mist make it past the piston rings and pushes into the crank case (blow by) which typically gets cycled back into the throttle body and intake. That mist accumulates in the throttle body, intake runners and gums up the valves, which can lead to poor performance. Putting a catch can in line catches that oily mist before it gets cycled back into the intake preventing that build up. That oil is heavier than air so it gets caught by the filter in the can and accumulates in the bottom. Only maintenance is checking/emptying it regularly.
