First we played Barbarian till we collapsed..., then we met all our friends for playing soccer in the back-yard or hide and seek in the woods till sunset. When we came home mother had already prepared the chickens in the stove for us. Then we watched "Fright Night", "The Fog", "Lost Boys" or "Silent Running" on our VHS. That was my time when I grew up in the early and middeighties!

I went to the guys with my checklist for the game that I would want to play: huge characters, brutal, over-the-top violence, laugh-out-loud moments, and cool sword fighting moves that were properly researched and animated. That's exactly how it turned out - we nailed it." -- Steve Brown, designer

"For me, one of the things that made Barbarian so special was the team - Steve Brown, Stan Schembri, Andy Fitter, Chris Stangroom, Richard Leinfellner, Sean Griffiths, Richard Joseph, and Dan Malone. We were much more than workmates; we were close friends. We literally worked and socialised together non-stop. I really feel that came through in the game." -- Gary Carr, graphic artist

"Thanks, Big Boy" -- LOOOL :D Back in the day, players needed to fill in the gaps with their imagination.. i guess that's why mine is so lively. :) And btw, I remember a bunch of us guys playing this as kids, yelling and cheering etc. Dad walks in the room, thinking what's going on, and right then someone gets decapitated on screen. Dad didn't approve :D

Today my dad and I booted up his old C64. When we were selecting the game, Barbarian popped up and my dad was like "that's one of my favorites" and we looked up the gameplay while we were waiting it to load. He always told me about how the little guy takes the defeated guy by the hair and takes him away. So, pretty much nostalgia for him lol.

@rendervisionfinland57487 жыл бұрын
This is still the number one beat em up game when it comes to the feeling of two guys fighting each other to the death with heavy swords. I dont know why, but it does not even need the stupid sound effects to make it feel like they actually fight, and not just slap each other (like in Street Fighter 2 for example). Also the moveset is the most beautiful still to date. Never mind the choppy few frame animation - but that actually helps creating the feeling of the two 120kg muscled barbarians fighting with heavy swords. True masterpiece still, of what it does, it does perfectly.

I always did good at this up until the cyan shirt guy. He was my equal in combat until I was about 10 years old, and then it wasn't so bad. I see you nailed him with the decap shot, good work! Soul Calibur is too arcade style for my taste , im thinking more sword dual in big destructable multi level open areas like in the PS1 game 'Bushido Blade' which didnt use health bars , you could just get scars & injuries & keep fighting while wounded , was pretty awesome . i think a Bushido Blade for next gen could offer some cool multiplayer sword duals , & make it so you can get wounded & scars like in the old Bushido Blade . did you ever play 'Bushido Blade' on PS1 ?

Played this a lot when it came out. One of the C64's most atmospheric soundtracks. It played well, but the main problem was that you could quite easily kill the first four opponents with the decapitation move. After that you just had to roll around and use web of death and the kick to get to Drax. Could never defeat him, though!
