In my case, even from family, I'm genuinely happy for them, that they're not going through the same, but I would love if they did some research on the matter and got an understanding of the subject. Thank you Jan Beta. I thoroughly enjoy watching your C64 repairs and because of you, I started learning to solder and do some repairs on my 64s. I even dared to replace two SID sockets. One day I will be brave enough to re-cap a 64. The thought scares me but then again, just 4 weeks ago, I wasn't sure which end of the soldering iron to hold 😂I hope 2025 will be a better year for you and your mental health. Thanks for the kind words! I always try to be as open as possible about mental health issues. They are still not talked about enough. So many people are suffering and they rarely dare to speak out because it's still an issue that is frowned upon by large parts of society. We are not alone. :) Hope the suppression diodes help preserving your machines! Just be careful when you use them with wonky power supplies. They protect the C64s but the PSUs might fail catastrophically when shorted out (depending on whether there's a fuse in the 5V rail). Happy Xmas and may 2025 be a great year! :)

I'm always thankful for the videos you put out, as there's always something to be learned, whether it's from you restoring some audio equipment or some Commodores. Here's to a new year that's hopefully healthier and happier for everyone. BTW I went all in on the modifications to my own 64C (that I still have from childhood)... it's got an RF modulator replacement board, JiffyDOS, modern RAM replacement, modern BASIC/character ROM replacements, brand new keycaps and a Lumafix for good measure. The only thing I have left to add is a dual SID board.

My very first Commodore 64 was a 64C, purchased at an after-Christmas sale in 1987. I remember the side of the case made an excellent place to mount a mini-joystick, which seemed like a fine substitute for a mouse back then. Re: the awl for cleaning holes: you may want to look into a set of "desoldering needles". They are hollow stainless steel tubes in various through-hole diameters; solder won't stick to them and they're great for clearing holes or even freeing up particularly stubborn leads/crusty solder, because they can often slip in between the part lead and the walls of the pcb hole

@@JanBeta For sure - a desoldering gun and hand tools go a long way, but in the cases I find myself needing them they're a game-changer :) Especially for parts where the leads were folded over in the hole, you can use them (with the assistance of heating from the iron) to manipulate the lead for smooth removal.

They are a bit of an odd construction. I imagine many of these broke because of heavy use so Commodore went back to the screw cases later. At least that’s what I assume (impossible to tell what Commodore was really planning and doing, it’s usually all over the place). 😅

Jan, I've been watching your channel for quite long time now and I really enjoy it. I've watched you do a lot of work on C-64's which to me demonstrates your in depth knowledge of these machines. Have you ever considered putting your knowledge in book form ?

Enjoyable video. Thank you, Jan. 🙂 Don't ever feel you need to apologise when there's difficult stuff going on behind the scenes. We all understand. I'm in the process of making a Plus/4 as nice as I can get it. I've unsoldered and replaced all the ports as they were quite worn and tatty. I changed the power port for a C64 type and have bought a nice new C64 PSU as the original Commodore one was putting out over 8v on the 5v line. I have new 8501 CPU and TED chips which I'm debating whether to fit (as the old ones still seem to work fine). Question - whether I use the new chips or not, what would you do with cooling on these two chips? Seems there's differences of opinion on what to do as I've read even Bill Herd says to just use the factory metal lid with the built in copper spring cooler & thermal paste for the TED. I'm really not sure what to do for the best...

Thanks! :) I haven't "future-proofed" my own Plus/4 yet. The TED and CPU can definitely use some proper cooling. In my experience, the original metal shields are extremely difficult to get to make good thermal contact with the chips. I actually cut out the places where the "lips" for the chips are on my C128's metal shield to be able to glue proper heat sinks to the ICs. I think that might be the most reliable option. Very little space in the Plus/4 though so maybe using the original shield (and maybe lots of thermal paste) is the only way.

I think so! The CPUs run a lot hotter in the TED systems than in the other Commodores in my experience. Which might be one of the reasons for them failing so frequently.
