Abandoned Ex Military John Deere 850J dozer pushes dirt for the first time ever?

If this tractor came from the USMC, you have to understand one thing about our beloved Corps. (BTW over 50 years ago, I worked the repair bench on Communication and Navigation Avionics on the F-4 Phantom) We could never ever get the parts we needed in the Corps. We always had a shitload of in-op equipment on the AWAP shelf (awaiting parts). We deployed to other bases often and transported our mobile maintenance vans with us on large transport planes. If we went to an Airforce Base, we took a list of parts we needed back in California. The first radio or TACAN that came in to our shop for repair, we then went to the Air Force supply building ordered a bunch of parts against that piece of equipment in addition to the parts it needed to be fixed. The Air Force always had the parts available. WE came back to California and fixed everything. I can postulate that the unit where they use these tractors had the same problem. A new tractor arriving was more valuable as a donor unit. So one new tractor could be cannibalized and fix 10 tractors. Our motto was. "We have done so much, with so little, for so long, that now we can do anything with nothing."

I was never in the service however, from my experience with equipment in many different industries. I can see that logistics is always a problem. More so for a world wide organization that is constantly on the move on a moments notice. Really a nightmare. Scavenging parts from a single unit to make multiple operational make perfect sense. @@ronvera It’s always more costly to cannibalism than to wait for the parts. Man hours are doubled. If you can’t support the mission have the balls to send it to headquarters for action.. However the star’s doesn’t give a crap just so they look good. Get in to supplies a$$ and get to work. I never did think marines should own airplanes anyway. They tear up everything they use…

When I was in {the early 80's} we had similar issues. What really sucked was as an operator/mechanic if you knew a piece of equipment was a piece of crap you still had to try to get it going no matter what. Command always hated to retire any piece of equipment unless they knew it could be replaced. Since we were in an Engineer Bat. rapid deployment was a huge driving force. But when a piece was retired you can bet it was stripped bare to the bones before it ever made it to the boneyard.

it's the little things that you guys make look easy, like installing the cab tilt cylinder and blindly installing the two washers. That sort of teamwork, sans conversation, can't be taught. It comes from both of you knowing exactly what to do and when to do it.............

Familiarity is the keyword. Clint, Kevin and Tucker have worked together long enough on a good few 850J's. Like anything, I guess. It becomes automatic and second nature after a while. They got the time to rib each other while they are working. The boys are past knowing how to fix it, they're just getting more proficient at it.

I was chuckling when you said "military dropped out of the sky" - saw a Humvee on which the drop parachute didn't open; that was a mess and not worth the time to even scrounge for parts. This 850 is sure a great build and fun to watch. Thanks for sharing it!

Clint, found this series on the 850 very interesting to watch and extremely informative as to what you are trying to get accomplished and the why’s and the reasons it was or wasn’t working and your thoughts on troubleshooting and overall function and performance of the 850. If a person really has the desire to learn, your channel is about the best equipment repair and troubleshooting channel on Y.T. to date, and there are some good ones out there. It is a pleasure to watch you and Tucker working together and to witness Tuckers growth, that young man is going to be a real asset to the company in time to come, mom and dad have a couple of fine young men being raised by you two, thank you for the update and once again, great video series.

37 yr servicemember here, it still frustrates me seeing equipment our military appears to waste with little or no use. This bulldozer probably was run without oil and destroyed the engine, then parted the machine out. That's a direct result of the one who ran it, didn't do their pre-operation checks. Rant over - Nice work getting it back to running order for this low time dozer!

Make a pipe to jack up the cab . Pipe so long , up 3" or so at the end weld around ( or pin the pipe) the pipe to stop the pipe from falling into the cab- jack - up - fitting. Making it easier to jack the cab up. Great job so far , quit or not !

Hey on that camouflage paint. I have been wanting to try taking a soft wood limb and a hardwood limb not to big. But needs to be springy and leafed. Spray the paint on the limbs not to heavy. Than slap the machine leaving a brush imprint instead of a normal camo paint job.
