This video covers the Antelope Valley Freeway portion of California State Route 14, beginning at the high-desert Lancaster/Palmdale area all the way to the freeway's southern terminus at the Newhall Pass Interchange.

Nice one! I've read somewhere that the 14 merge onto the 5 freeway is one of the worst morning bottlenecks in the region.

Nice video. As a Palmdale native this is by far my most traveled freeway. Would've been nice to see a note about Vasquez Rocks when you passed by them though. Many people in Southern California still don't know about this area.

Unfortunately, I am one of those Southern Californians who don't really know about the area :( Are the rocks visible from the freeway?

You can just barely see them off to the right at about 5:33-5:50 in the video. Unfortunately, not much shows up on camera, but if you look out toward the right (going southbound), you'll see them. The area has quite the film history, being used in numerous TV shows, movies, commercials, and music videos.

Indeed. Easily one the most impressive stack interchanges in the Los Angeles metro area, especially when seen from the lower level truck ramps.

I am curious though, why do separate ramps for trucks and autos exist? I've never seen anything like that before.

I don't know for sure, but it has very likely to do with managing traffic congestion. I believe this interchange is part of a very important truck route, connecting the crowded Los Angeles area to the Central Valley with its massive agricultural business.

the right side of a truck is extremely blind to the truck driver. So in extreme merge areas they seperate the autos from the bigger rigs then merge the bigger rigs back into traffic. works very well.

I saw on google maps that there is a landfill near the 5 and 14 freeway interchange. Since there is a landfill near by I doubt the 14 freeway will ever be extended further south through Granada hills eventually connecting with the 101 in Encino

If the 14 freeway were extended south past the 5 freeway a lot of people would lose houses since the 14 would cut through Granada hills, north ridge lake Balboa and it would also cost money to build an interchange where the 14 would connect with the 101 in encino

Do you know if the musical road on avenue G is still in good shape? or has it worn down over the years? I'd like to drive on it someday soon but I know its been around for almost ten years now (I think) and things like that aren't always preserved once they've worn down...

6x on the first minute where the terrain was still flat. As I was approaching the canyon, I gradually slowed it down to 4x, which pretty much remained until the end of the video. Any feedback on the speed, John? Too fast or too slow?

Speed was good. In fact I sped the video up by 30% (beast mode engaged) I am trying to imagine a Kia driving at 400 mph. Mind blown!

The western end and closest point of US 6 is in Bishop, CA which is about 3 hours (200 miles) north of the start of this video.

how come you using a i-5 south Los Angeles TRUCKS only ramp instead of AUTOS

I wanted to see the Newhall Pass Interchange from the lower level, which looks pretty impressive, don't you think? It is actually NOT illegal for autos to drive along the truck ramps. I did not know that until recently lol.

correct, it is not illegal. but as a truck driver it is a bit unnerving to have cars racing past the trucks in a zone designed to safely merge the two sizes of vehicles back together. Otherwise what is the point of separating the trucks from the cars if the cars are just going to come with the trucks? In theory the idea was good. In practice too many cars always take the truck lane any way.
