Excellent film - the best there is of the WCML from Euston to Rugby, post the PUG1 upgrade completed in 2008 which involved new ladder connections and modernisation of the catenary, which was installed in 1964-65. The Class 350/1 emus operate at 110 mph so now use the fast tracks. Topical comparison: Johanna Konta's first serves at Wimbledon this month (July 2019) are recorded typically at 110 mph. Imagine a hitting a tennis ball coming at you at the speed of this train.

Cracking spot of a 86 and a 37 at Willesden :) I have always preferred the WCML over the ECML for travelling, a few weeks back I came down from Glasgow on a 390 and what a pleasant comfortable journey it was. OK I missed the good ol' slam door where you could have your head angled out the window a bit with your camera and it always catches me not to see the ol' EPB type stock running on the 4th rail zipping in and out of Euston or the express EMU's up to the midlands or standing at platform end watching the old 85 shuffling coaches to and fro from the stables and the incoming howls of the 86's and 87's as they sneaked in. Happy days :)

Around Blisworth (42.40) - a Civil Engineers siding appears on the down side. That is all that it is left of a junction and a once extensive array of sidings here. The wide span OHLE masts are a clue, so other lines no longer in existence, were wired too.

Finally! This is something I wanted to see! (The sound of the clickety-click clackety-clack when gliding on the track is enough to make me fall asleep, but not the beeping with it, sounds very annoying.) Also, this makes me realise how long this journey is going to be. 32:06 at Milton Keynes Central, "Please make sure that you have all your personal belongings with you at all times. And please take care when stepping from the train onto the platform. Thank you for travelling with London Midland." 33:08 "Welcome aboard this London Midland service to Crewe. We will be calling at: Rugby, Alley, Atherstone, Tamworth, Litchfield Trent Valley, Rugeley Trent Valley, Stafford, Stoke on Trent and Crewe. The next stop will be Rugby." 34:50 "Please do not leave any belongings unattended. They may be removed without notice. Please familiarise yourself of the safety notices displayed around the train."

Its a measure introduced to mitigate the risk of "read across". You are approaching a signal gantry on a curve its all to easy to read across and sight the wrong signal, especially in darkness! If you are allocated a letter, in this case 'D', you then look for the next D and so on. The entrance to Leeds is another example and has multiple tracks on a long curve- uses the same system!

how does a signal change from green to red as soon as a train passes that signal?
@kimjongbingbongtingtong4430
@kimjongbingbongtingtong4430 4 жыл бұрын
Track circuits sense the position of the train and automatically set the signals to red when they enter a section. After that, signals are slowly released through single yellow, double yellow and green as the train passes subsequent signals unless the signallers hold them at another setting for safety or other train movement reasons. About 30% of the UK signalling is completely automated BUT everything has a fail-safe system and virtually all accidents are caused by a SPAD (Signal Passed At Danger). UK train crews are incredibly professional and even small mistakes (minor speeding etc) can result in suspensions, retraining and dismissals. If you really interested in how basic signalling works there is a great example in this video starting at 52:25 where the driver approaching Rugby is 'given' a double-yellow which causes them to slow down, this is followed by a single yellow where the driver slows more because the next signal could be at danger/red. When the train actually approaches it you can see that it is red at 53:25, but watch carefully as it 'steps up' to green and the junction indicator 'feather' (additional white lights) show the driver that the route ahead is actually clear, but the train will be passing through a turnout and heading off the mainline to the right.
@russouk
@russouk 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah as kim says...the red aspeect ensures no train after is in same block as ours.and will turn to green proceed aspect when we leave the block ...the subsequent trains are held at yellow aspect or two yellows depending on where our train is in block..same goes for our train in regards to the train ahead of us in next block...the signals are self controlled by the sensors,unless the controller sees something the signals miss...and he can then overide them and set signals accordingly.
@tonyp011
@tonyp011 4 жыл бұрын
russell morgan thx for that, but how would the lights change if the sensors are covered in deep snow and the snow as been frozen from frost, is that where a signaller would earn his money as the saying goes,
@kimjongbingbongtingtong4430
@kimjongbingbongtingtong4430 4 жыл бұрын
@@tonyp011 if there is a climatic issue it has to be rectified by Network Rail, but in the short term there is usually a signaller controlled movement until NR can diagnose and clean up the problem. There are many such events every year, but most can be predicted and delays minimised on this. Frost on railheads really isn't an issue because the weight of the train quickly clears the problem and snow doesn't usually conduct to the point that it becomes a problem.

@@zachjohns6776 48.30-49.25. The M1 just south of Watford Gap services. The services themselves can just about be seen but are largely hidden by trees. I always feel disappointed when I drive along this section in the car & do not see a train passing me.

Crewe services usually have 4 coaches. Most double/triples are only seen as far as Northampton. London-Crewe often doesn't call at Northampton

What is the station stop at 32:30? Oh it's Milton Keynes Central as I found out in an entry down below. Nice fast ride on the WCML.

Wonder what the Victorians would make of the lineside garbage,graffiti and vegetation?.Woeful lack of respect for our environment in todays world.

The graffiti plague is tragically everywhere. In any major city you'll find it, and I just don't understand the mentality of those who do it. I used to love the city of Athens, but in recent years the place is just covered in these mindless splurges.
