I remember seeing her quite often at Claridge's, and sometimes at Hardy Amies. If I remember correctly her car number plate was BC29, because, she said, no lady was ever older than 29.

My apologies to the late Barbara Cartland for the comparison to Oprah.

As an author she was prolific. The subjects are rather recycled soft porn for hetero women. Cartland was quite a character. Her style was a hilarious mix of English country house and candy clown pinkdom. Her look was pure drag. A great successful life.

Oh, how wonderful that you did such a lovely piece on this grande dame. I've read probably 90% of all the books she ever wrote. I loved her style, Barbara Cartland was indeed one of a kind. I was much taken with the statement at the end that her energy was akin to Oprah's energy field. Interesting observation. Both were/are driven to work and succeed and have become inspirational icons for women.

She sort of went for the Marchessa Casati school of appearance which is if you can no longer look beautiful just go freaking all out mad with your appearance. Basically a drag queen ethos which Raine Spencer and Joan Collins also went for. I miss the 80s.

I started reading Barbara Cartland historical romances, when I was in 6th grade; my grandmother had them at her home and would give them to me after she had read them. I loved the beauty, the hope, the history, the ball gowns! I was probably in 8th grade when I realized the meaning of her usual last line: "...and they were one..." . Your beautiful and honest video is a wonderful tribute to Ms. Cartland and my childhood memories. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this , I grew up in the 1950’s Ireland, I loved books from an early age I knew of Dame Barbara Cartland , I only read non fiction , so I had no interest in her Romantic Novels I was happy this morning to find this lovely video, thanks so much for the enlightenment. Really enjoyed this video, however the last fifteen seconds laughable. I hold Dame Barbara in much higher regards. Our "French" diction instructor had us read sections of her books out loud so that we wouldn't stumble when we came to foreign word pronunciations.

Hearing it, I actually laughed out loud; thank goodness I wasn't drinking something, else it would have spewed comically from my mouth, like in the movies. There must be an ulterior motive for making this hideous comparison. There's nothing special or interesting about OW; what you see is what you get, which isn't much -- the most banal talentless individual to ever make it in the big time.
