She's certainly grown on me, a lot of my friends don't like her as Sally but I really like how unhinged and unstable her Sally is. This is by far my favorite production of Cabaret, much more so than the movie.
@MAlexandra15210 жыл бұрын
Everyone is talking about how annoying they find Sally, but I love this kooky version of her. It's the first one I saw and I can't imagine her as a perfectly sympathetic sexy character. I actually find her pretty sympathetic in this, she seems like a real person with flaws - lots of them - but with a good heart, and a beautiful soul behind the walls and facades she puts up for her own protection.
@StandAsYouAre10 жыл бұрын
I think people have to remember the character is meant to be 19 years old. 19 year olds usually make a total mess of their lives when all they do is party all the time. And Sally pretty much does party all the time, but she has fun while being a mess...
@richardengelhardt582 Жыл бұрын
Of course, Sally, the MC, and all, are meant to be grating -- the Kit Kat Club is for no talent losers who represent the clueless population of irresponsible hedonists who through their willful ignorance, self-absorption, and inaction made Hilter's rise inevitable. Cabaret is a high stakes morality play.
@kangadillo8 жыл бұрын
AC said that after the show when he would go out the stage door there'd be a bunch of fans and some of them would say "You are so disgusting but I love you!" Joel Grey also said that the character is repellent and mesmerizing at the same time. You can't take your eyes off him in spite of yourself.

In my opinion as an actress, a character is no good if there is only one way to portray them. An actor should always take risks with his character.. If everyone portrayed the Emcee like Joel Grey (who is absolutely fantastic), then we wouldn't have Alan Cumming's fantastic portrayal. Jane's portrayal is risky compared to Liza's, but her Sally is just as heart-wrenchingly simple. I like Jane.

..as for the chilling finale, the emcee is revealed beneath his Nazi uniform to be a concentration camp prisoner with a variety of badges on his shirt. Is he Jewish? Is he Gay? Is he both? And what is that third badge for? I don't recognize it at all. Like everything else in our Cabaret, this is just more symbolism. It symbolizes all of our characters left behind where life is a Cabaret - except a Cabaret of horror where all the participants are doomed. Gives me chills.- part three

The woman on the right of "Two ladies" was my vocal lecturer at drsma school.... She was a horrible person! She could have been a great teacher had she not had an ego, favourites, attitude and above all, was kinder to people. In my 3rd year, I remember her practically singling me out in front of my entire course saying I'd never make it as an actor .. Was so incredibly disheartening to know she thought that about me the entire time she was my lecturer.. 🤷♀️ Props to her though, she did very well fir her part in this show and to work with Alan Cummings, gotta admire that

It also shows him with the yellow star and some other patch I don't recognize. But don't forget that the emcee and the cabaret performers are symbolic characters, like a Greek chorus. @AbbeyBenold10 жыл бұрын
Jane Horrocks is an incredible singer, but she is purposefully singing poorly in this because Sally Bowles is not supposed to be a good singer.
@havefun13710 жыл бұрын
Yes, but if she continues doing so, she will ruin her perfectly good actual singing voice. By straining your voice in an unnatural way, such as she is doing here, you can permanently damage, or possibly completely destroy, your vocal chords.
@havefun1379 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, she IS straining her voice. That is the thing. Her body doesn't know she's playing a character and therefore what she is doing is detrimental to her vocal health. Screaming and belting can cause vocal nodules and hemorrhages and can possibly ultimately lead to complete loss of voice. Vocal chords are very delicate and what she is doing just sounds unhealthy.

I think you're confusing a production choice with a script direction. The 1998 Broadway revival had a man as one of the "two ladies". And perhaps other productions have done so, but neither the Original 1966 Broadway Production, the Original 1968 London production, nor this, the 1993 London production had a man as one of the "Two ladies".

@finleyforevermore4 ай бұрын
The kiss between Bobby and Cliff was added for the 1993/1998 Sam Mendez productions, which cut the Telephone Song. The proshot is a blend of the 1987 revival script and the 1993/1998 script, so it includes the kiss, but cuts The Telephone Song, putting Mein Herr from 1993/1998 in its place.
