Cabaret sequence from 1936 film Ave Maria

Hungarian/German actress Käthe von Nagy (1904-73) was tenor Beniamino Gigli's co-star in "Ave Maria", playing the French chanteuse Claudette. Here in a Paris nightclub (actually filmed in Berlin) she sings "das Herz von Paris" and "Ich liebe". Watching her are opera manager Amadeo (Paul Henckels) and two blonde fans of his client Tino Dossi (Gigli).

Fascinating film history, and von Nagy is outstanding. I'm surprised a film like this was permitted by the Nazis.

Kleine Anmerkung zu dem schönen Video. Käthe von Nagy singt zwar in einigen ihrer Filme. Hier - also in "Ave Maria" singt sie nicht selber. Sie wurde von Hilde Seipp gedoubelt- vgl. dazu die Schellackfassung von Hilde Seipp. Vermutlich klang ihre Stimme für die Szene nicht verrucht genug. Käthes Stime ist heller. LG Alparfan
