Holy sh*t they're using the old locomotive! Usually nowadays they use the new one that was parked on the side today.

They are trying to get "gramps," as they call it, out more often

@@TSMGL_KZbin Oh that’s a good thing. Lol the spare engine at Wheaton looks so dilapidated compared to this one.

@@davidng2336 There is no spare locomotive at Wheaton Regional Park. They have trucked the #281 over there before, the parks department has a pretty slick highway trailer fitted with rails and a winch to move stuff around.

@@mattstrainroom Oh interesting. I thought there was a spare because in some videos of the Wheaton Park Railroad there seems to be another CP Huntington on the pocket track. EDIT: Never mind the dilapidated engine described was at Watkins Park. It’s being restored for static display.

@@davidng2336 No, only one (#357). Cabin John Park, as seen here in this video, does keep 2 locos in service (first time in 50+ years that 2 locos are in service there at one time). There is no track space at Wheaton. The building will only fit 1 loco and 5 cars with inches to spare. Interestingly enough, when WRP was founded and the train started running there circa 1964, they did run 2 complete 16" Gauge Allan Herschell S-16 train sets. There is a postcard out there of them running together. Actually the switch frogs are still marked "Allan Herschell". The gauge was stretched to 2 foot sometime around 1970 I think. I had a lot of fun (most of the time) working on the trains at the parks over the years.

Do you have any info on the locomotive? The KC Zoo has these same types of locomotives and I would like to have info on what they are.

These are C.P. Huntington Locomotives built by Chance Rides Inc of Wichita, Kansas. Most times you can identify which locomotive it is in the production line by looking at the number board on the side of the false bunker. The 281, which you see operating, was made in 1995 about alongside its sister 280, which could have been seen at Wheaton Regional Park. The 378, which was on display, was made in roughly 2014. If you do enough surfing on google, you can find a decent amount of info on the KC zoo engines. I myself have found a 2017 theme park magazine issue from Amusement today that lists all the CP Huntingtons as of 2017.

@@TSMGL_KZbin After the 280 was replaced by the 357, they sent the 280 back to Chance Rides. I don't know what happened after that.
