Gripples are also used to secure vineyard trellis wire looped around posts - solid wire with a ratchet tensioner near one end.

True! They are used for lots of fencing-type applications, and the tensioner is critical in those cases. Not so much for entertainment rigging.

I'm curious if the verlock suffers over time if you pull cable through without loosening it properly to adjust length - not unscrewing to the point of looseness, just enough to be able to pull the cable through more with a hand?

This is an interesting inquiry, but would be pretty hard to quantify. Despite that, we will add it to our list of potential projects, as it would be fun to try to get some data! Thanks!

Should a Verlock be used at the top or bottom of the system. That is, hanging a Christmas Tree (load) from the cable glide or is the Glide up at the batton

You could use a cable glide at either end, as long as you install it properly and stay within the allowable loading.

Did you tighten the verlocks when you tested them? Looks like the knurled nut bits are threaded loose on all three

I had to go back and look at the video, because I was sure I tightened them, but sure enough, they are open. The spring still grabs, but if they were bumped, they would let the cable move. Good thing this was only a test! (Even folks with lots of experience miss things - get someone to double check your work whenever possible!)

Good Catch- it's those small things that cause bridges to collapse and planes to crash.
