I really enjoyed today’s podcast. I love cables, too! I do have a suggestion: if you do a podcast like this again, please keep the picture of the pattern up on the screen the entire time you’re talking about it. It would be nice to see it longer. Thanks!

Thank you for the shoutout Rebecca! I looooooove my Eclair Raglan and can confirm that I wear it all the time! I wish I had it with me today at work because it's so chilly in the office today haha! One of my other favourites that I'm currently working on right now is the Arcuate Vest by Charissa -- really easy cable pattern to follow, cable rows aren't very often so you're most knitting and purling, but the finished vest is going to be so cool. I can see myself wearing it with so many outfits! I have your Dornie Sweater on my to be knit list because I adore your green version!

Norah Gaughan is the QUEEN of cables! Her 'Knitted Cable Sourcebook' is never far away when I am planning my next project. It's rare that I use a pattern as the designer wrote it but her 'Stag's Head Sweater' is SO clever and SO original, I knitted it exactly as she designed it. There's a wonderful cardigan of hers that is often admired when I wear it but I can't remember the design name right now. When I find it, I'll add it. Hudson and West 'Awen' and 'Saven' are for those who enjoy a challenge. The other person I would mention is Martin Storey. His 'Easy Cable Knits' is a fantastic starter book and makes a great gift for someone just starting to explore cable knitting. There's also 'Easy Aran Knits' and 'Afghan Knits'. My tip for cable knitting, especially when using a design from a book, is to scan off the charts to your computer, enlarge each chart to a decent size so they're easier to see and scan off the key to the pattern. Now c&p the key to EACH page of the chart. Saves you flicking back and forth to the key and squinting to see the chart as I find, personally, that charts are generally too small.

I like knitting some cables, but you definitely give me the mojo to knit more and in different ways (these just evocated moves, a simple twist, like in the Midori Hirose's sweater you describe !). It's so interesting to listen to a designer talking of other designers' work. And this episode gives a lot to explore. It's a great one ! I adore cable knit sweaters. My favorite was one I knit my husband called Captains Fisherman Sweater many decades ago. It's full of different size cables, popcorn stitch. The pattern got lost over time, still have the sweater though. I searched and bought the same pattern on Etsy - it's vintage now!! When did I get so old!! 🙂 Love your cable knit sweaters. Wonderful designs.

I have never knit or crocheted a cable design. I will have to consider these patterns in the future; they look lovely. I understand why so many people do not like sweaters that you have to seam but I have found that heavy sweaters have more structure if they are seamed and just fit better. I love making sweaters that have no seaming but I find I wear the seamed sweaters more because they don't stretch out as much. I love your designs and I think you offer a lot of options in your patterns which makes the price very reasonable. I appreciate that.

@MegKnutmegknitsАй бұрын
Jared Flood and the Brooklyn Tweed design team have great, classic cable patterns. And one of my very favorite and most worn sweaters is the Foldline. The seaming is very easy (its drop shoulder so all straight mattress stitch) and because it’s written so well, the seams line up so well. And you read my mind with cable season- I spent way too much time yesterday searching Rav for the perfect cable sweater to cast on!

Quite recently I finished my first cable project, Yukinko mittens by Yucca. I loved the pattern, they went so quickly (considering how slow I knit), if there only was more than one size.. It fits me, but I have hands of a maybe 6 years old child, and there were a lot of comments of people saying that they're small. But I think I might make a headband with this pattern, I really liked it (and they will be a gift for my mum, matching headband would be really cool). If someone has really small hands or wants to make ones for their elementary school aged kid I can recommend them, they weren't hard at all, but still there was so much to do. They weren't boring, but I didn't have to constantly look at the pattern too.

I love cables also. I knit The Snowy Forest and loved it. However I used superwash yarn and it stretched to much. I tightened the cables from the back and it worked great. That pattern is worth a try. Thanks for your sweater suggestions. I’ll have a much longer sweater queue now. 😁

Yes, autumn is cable season. Media may well play a role. I am enjoying this lovely podcast while gauge swatching for Joanna Ang's Helia, which has gorgeous, unique cables just running down the arms. I particularly enjoyed knitting Thea Colman's Chambord pullover and Norah Gaughan's Deliciosa, though I do prefer top-down in the round construction. Next cabled sweater project is your Lauder, for which I am still contemplating yarn selection. One thing that is a challenge with cables for those of us who run hot (always or just later in life) is that they do add weight and warmth to a garment. Aran is generally just too much for me, though I know your pattern calls for it. I'll gauge swatch, of course, because I want my Lauder to fit like you designed it to, but I am going to try to find a heavy DK/light worsted that can work. Hoping I can sort that and be ready to cast on as soon as Helia is off the needles. If you have thoughts on how to effectively lighten up yours or any cabled designs without losing their essential design characteristics, I would love to hear them!

We used to carry Hudson and West in our shop (The Lamb & Kid). I agree that their cabled patterns are GORGEOUS! We had a bunch of their knitted samples for a trunk show and they are stunners. The thing to know about their yarn though, is that when it is knit up in a garment, the garment is HEAVY! It weighs a ton. Just something to keep in mind. Would be great for outerwear and they probably wear well over time.

Hi Rebecca, Loved this episode showcasing so many cable knitware designers. I want to look up pics for all the sweaters you highlighted. I also wanted to mention a designer who was not on your radar screen named Kate Oates who is a prolific knitter and I discovered her patterns last year. She started out predominately showcasing children's patterns and there are quite a few children's cabled items in her collection. But she has now also included cable sweaters for adults and she has some really nice unexpected cable designs. I purchased the pattern 'Jesse's Girl' as well as The Fibre Co Arranmore Light yarn coupled with a soft lace to be able to achieve the worsted gauge. I will probably tackle that this winter sometime. Got Zwieg by Caitlin Hunter ahead in the que before Jessie's Girl. Big decisions right? Thanks for sharing all your knitting insights with us!!!! Carrie from Eugene Oregon😘❤🐕🐑☕🧵🪡🧶

If you aren't experienced at cables, the pieced sweaters can be easier not just for portability but because you have wrong side rows, not just rest rows, so it's much easier to read your knitting and figure out if THIS is the row with a cable or if it's the NEXT row where that happens. (Personally, I do usually convert these to have the body knit in the round though.)
@fvidder221018 күн бұрын
Saven is inspired by the vibe of Knives Out, btw. The Handsome Chris is a free pattern that actually attempts to replicate the specific sweater from the movie. Both are very pretty.
