I’m coming down to San Diego next month for the first time and will have some time for fishing. Your pier videos and website have really helped me get a handle on what’s possible - thank you! If I had a day, is Catalina worth the day trip at the end of March or is it too busy already?

Weekdays are always better to beat the crowds. Many anglers come for a day. I usually go for three weekdays when I can.

I head down to the Mole or the Green Pleasure Pier as early as possible but the fish will actually bite all day and I've long thought the afternoon, when the mole's water is in the shade from the sun, actually produces better fishing. As for the shop on the Green Pleasure Pier that has some tackle, I believe they usually open at about seven but hours have varied over the years and it changes with the seasons.

We will be arriving in Catalina Island on a tender from the RCL Navigator in mid August. We love fishing. Would it be realistic for us to do a bit of fishing on this pier with hand lines? How far is the pier from where our tender will land? Thanks for your videos!

I am not sure where your tender will be arriving but yes you can fish with hand lines from both the Green Pleasure Pier and the Cabrillo Mole. Make sure you use monofilament line or even better use fluorocarbon given the water is often crystal clear. Size 6 or 4 hooks and appropriate bait, probably shrimp although you may be surprised what frozen peas can catch.

No kelp greenling at the mole, they live farther north and yes they can be eaten,

How many times do you have to trick a dumb animal into thinking that something is good to eat that isn't really good to eat before you satisfy yourself that you can do it? Honestly, catch and release is like a guy I met years ago who used to shoot at coyotes with pellet gun because "oh, it doesn't kill them." Maiming wild animals for fun. Humans are such great creatures. Leave those poor fish alone and find something useful to do with your time.
