The signal mentioned in the beginning is passed in the main video around 32:45. This is definitely an interesting case, as flashing yellow is not often seen in NL. Wikipedia says it means "proceed on sight", ie. expecting to find an obstruction. The signal aspects surrounding this signal are, in order of passing: Yellow 4 (slow to 40kph), steady yellow (expect to stop), flashing yellow (proceed on sight), steady green (clear). These are all in quick succession, as this is just coming out of the extremely busy Amsterdam Centraal area. My interpretation of this is that the track circuit between the flashing yellow and the steady green has failed and is showing occupied, and the signalman has set the signal to show "proceed on sight" instead of "stop" in order to keep the traffic moving. Presumably he first obtained confirmation that the track was in fact clear of obstructions and safe to proceed over.

Thanks for this discussion on how the illuminated signals are interpreted. I have not previously seen flashing signals interpreted. And, as always, thanks Cabview Holland for an interesting "ride" through Holland.

I thought that you would be right on time. I was off by 4 seconds ha ha! What a beautiful day! And the Netherlands countryside is amazingly lush and green, to these Australian eyes. Cool shot of the blue train coming into Zwolle from Kampen right at the end, too. It's a shame, though, that NS lost the run out to Kampen. I enjoyed the videos in the old diesel cars out to Kampen, as well as the run through Nijverdal, also lost. I was watching the electrification of those lines and the upgrading of Nijverdal station, and when it was all done, that was the end of the those videos. Oh well; that's the way it goes, I suppose. Thanks for the video!

Flashing Yellow means 'proceed on sight'. Keep speed below 40Km/h. It can mean you are approsching an uncontrolled section of track. Or it's occupied by A (defective) train. I've seen this signal when a train was stuck on a bridge without overhead wires. Now it's follwed by a green signal. I think there's a failure at the section of track after the flashing yellow signal. They had to use flashing-yellow to avoid that the signal is RED. Showing that this track is occupied. The trains might slow down but, now the trains can keep moving. Correct me if I'm wrong🙂

The history of the earlier Amsterdam stations is rather interesting. The first one, d'Eenhonderd Roe, was opened in 1839 as a temporary facility. It was replaced by the (almost forgotten but very innovative) station Willemspoort, opposite what is today called the Haarlemmerpoort and about half a kilometer closer to the city, in 1842. That was closed and replaced by another temporary station, Westerdok (just west of today's Centraal), again in 1878, before everything was moved to Centraal in 1889. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Centraal. It looks nice enough, but it also closes the city off from the IJ, which I don't think is worth it.

The yellow flashing singnal at 0:55 is a "proceed on sight with authorization" and is equivalent to the "permissive green" used in Italy.
@marcodamasio8 ай бұрын
The Italian "green", whether it is permissive or not, does not require an authorization to pass it, the signal itself is the authorization

I've seen several of your videos now and thanks for the hard work, but could you explain please what 'coasting' is?
@Kromaatikse Жыл бұрын
It's simply running with the throttle closed. A steel wheel on steel rail interface has an exceptionally low rolling resistance, and a train's low frontal area compared to its mass leads to low wind resistance as well, making it extremely energy efficient. Thus, as you can see here, the train still has about half its speed after running for a dozen miles on nearly level track without any power applied. The reason this works without losing any time is because the timetable is designed with a few minutes of "slack" per complete journey, usually spread somewhat between all the stops. If the train is running late, this can be used to "recover the service" and get back on time by simply running at the speed limit throughout. But if the train is on time to begin with, it can be used to reduce energy consumption by coasting.

I just wanted to 'coast' through this video (in the figurative use of the verb 'to coast') this early Saturday morning 'cause I'm still tired from last night's fireworks and rowdy Mexicans as they celebrated their Independence Day here. It doesn't take much to get included on a calendar here as a holiday or day of festivities. I should be used to it by now, but I'm not. Thank you for your clever and judicious use of your train's ON/OFF switch. The power savings are/were significant, I'm sure. Gracias por tu video, Señor Cabview. It was (de) electrifying. You have mentioned 'coasting' a number of times recently. Is this a practice employed by other NS drivers? As for being late or not, it is a foregone conclusion that you won't be when YOU ask the question. 😄
