NEVER EVER touch Bunny cactus without wearing gloves. The glochids are barbs thinner than hair and numerous numbers of them will embed themselves in your skin, causing a lot of irritation.

Planted and replanted without gloves or anything. The spikes are rather soft and harmless, but if you DO get painful irritation from cacti just place your hands in hot water, the heat makes the gentle spike structle to dissipate,and irritation under skin will eventually pass

Yes, no gloves. This is an opuntia "microdasys" - the dwarf version. On my end, its just fine to touch it as long as you don't press it hard. It is different from the thorny prickly pears or "Opuntia" - the big version. Wearing gloves is best, but this is just my personal preference :)
@stevenschnepp5766 жыл бұрын
Weird. I'm just the opposite; the big thorns I can deal with and avoid a lot better than the tiny prickly hairs that get into your skin at the slightest provocation. I was cringing every time I saw you twisting the pads.

Hi Steven, thank you for your comment. It really depends on personal preference, I can handle both bristle hairs and big thorns by hand :) and I'm used to it, so it hinders me doing these things with something on. Great video! I do have a couple questions. We recently moved, I put the pot in a room and forgot about it for 2-3 months. There are 3-4 in the pot, each having grown maybe 8" with all the lobes. Just noticed the base lobe (in the dirt) is basically rotted and brown, but the rest is fine. Another, a middle lobe is soft and yellow and the rest is fine. I'd be inclined to separate the bad parts and replant the good parts, but wasn't sure if they'd survive with regrowing root systems. The video makes me think they grow pretty fast. Help and thanks!

Two notes: I heard that if you mist these cacti with water then the spines become super heavy and don’t stick you as much. At least It will weigh them down and prevent them from becoming airborne and dislodged from the plant. And another thing, all species of cacti will regenerate a new plant from just one areole, the place where the spines grow out of. You could literally lay a pad on the ground and it will root into the ground. As long as you ignore it LOL
@erikm83723 жыл бұрын
Basically you can chop up a cactus into 1 billion pieces and Simply lay them on dry soil in the shade; watch them re-grow and make roots.

I live in the DC area in USA. It is now 3 days from November. Would you suggest to let them sit through the winter and propagate them in spring or I can just do it now? Thank you for the useful info! I am completely beginner who just do propagation today. It's pity I did not watch this video before I performed. I have some questions. The seller told me that to propagate is twist the pad and put in the soil, but he did not tell me to wait for 24 hours. Does it have any problem if I did not wait? And I don't need to do anything with mother's wound (I don't know how to say in English. I mean the original one's wound), right? The other question, I got pricked by its glochids at my arms and forearms, even I wore gloves. I don't know how did it fly to prick me there. How do you handle this problem?
@succulentsforbeginners5 жыл бұрын
Does it have any problem if I did not wait? Ans: It's ok as long as your soil is totally dry and you did not water it until it grow roots I got pricked by its glochids at my arms and forearms, even I wore gloves. I don't know how did it fly to prick me there. How do you handle this problem? Ans: wash it with soap. As long as glochids just stick to your front of fingers (skin similar to palm), its easy to remove them. But if they reach at the back of your fingers and other parts of your skin, it can get very irritating and itchy. So when handling this, make sure not to touch any part of "bunny ears" with your skin other than the skin of your front fingers (skin similar to palm area)

Thank you so much for your answer! The time has passed for 2 weeks, its root generates about 5 mm. not as long as yours. Since I have a pretty tight schedule, I try to water every day but sometimes every 2 days, once a day at night. Does that mean the soil does not moist enough to encourage the growth of its root?

Hi Sheilene Villeza, that's a sign that your opuntia is not getting enough sun. The elongated growth will not fatten up but the new growths will grow rounded pads when exposed to sun properly. Just dont forget to slowly introduce it to sun like 3hours in the first week, another 3hours in the second week and so on
@jimini19765 жыл бұрын
Mine do that over the winter while they are indoors, I dont give them any direct sun so they grow leaning toward the nearest window. Im in upstate NY, not cacti friendly during winter. Every few weeks I turn the pot a bit and by springtime they look almost like a spiral. Some grow 5 or 6 inches. During the summer some get thicker and grow new ears and some break off and keep growing.Some of them look very odd. 10 years ago someone gave me 2 of these and now have 50 or 60 + gave away a bunch. Hi Vienna, thanks for watching. It's slightly not safe to water the pads if there's no way for it to dry like in the rainy season or your cactus is not exposed to sunlight/heat. @succulentsforbeginners5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will. I've done the same with white.

Hi Mirtel, thank you for the comment. I absolutely know those things but despite of that I can handle well with bare hands. I know someone will react to it like you that's why I put a warning sign in the video saying "warning, use gloves". Not many people can handle bunny ears by hand :)

Whice session catus grafting cutting &poring??
@succulentsforbeginners6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sumitra Subba, thank you for watching and for your comment. I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but are you asking which is better - grafting or potting? If this is your question, it depends on the type of cactus or succulent. There are cactus that grows faster when grafted. While this bunny ear cactus I find them to grow faster if we cut it in pads and pot it. You can also comment here in your own language, internet will translate it for me :)
