Your comment is from 7 years ago. I just read it 4/25/20. I know how you felt then, and I can only imagine how you feel today. I imagine it's exactly how I feel. Dismal is the word. The state of popular music today is dismal. I don't understand what happened. I can only speculate, and there isn't one lone reason for the cause. I'll try to give some sort of explanation for what I believe happened, even though I'm incredibly sleep deprived at the moment. 😥🤔 We grew up in a different time. I was born in 1963. Writing that makes me feel old, but I'm not depressed or pining for my youth when I think about it. I'm just acceptive of it. Things were more vibrant in the 60's & 70's. Everything was changing rapidly socially, systemically and generationally. The 40's up to the mid 50's were different in the sense that there was more of a uniform conformity that existed between youth and their elders. Any rebellion by the younger generation against "established norms" (for lack of a better phrase) was muted, and if it reared its head, it was frowned upon or discouraged. The rule was, listen to your parents because they know what's best for you, and for the most part they were right. We had just come out of WW II victorious, the bad guys were defeated and freedom won against fascism and tyrannical dictators. The men who returned were heroes and they deserved respect, rightly so. At that point, America was a legitimate world super power, both militarily and economically. We were a beacon of freedom & success and we had the respect of the world, begrudgingly or not. Then, something happened. Whether due to the relative peace we enjoyed (with the exception of the Korean Confluct) or our increasing prosperity, the older generation eased up on the younger generation incrementally and youth began to test their newfound freedoms and push the envelope a bit, to see how far they could take it. Music that came with this new, youthful energy reflected that sense of power or individuality that was bubbling out. Rhythm and blues kind of semi-merged with country music and rockabilly or rock and roll was born. That music belonged to the kids, not their parents, and of course it became a powerful force very quickly. Fast forward to the early-mid 1960's and the social upheaval, civil unrest, Vietnam war and drugs formed a perfect storm for teenagers and those in their twenties to rebel and totally lay claim to their individualism. It was youth vs the establishment and it was a whole new ballgame, so to speak. Fast forward again to mid & late 70's. By 1977-78, most of the social upheaval had run it's course, record companies had taken control of the direction of the music scene to a large degree and the state of the country basically sucked. There was high inflation, high unemployment, high gas prices and extremely low national moral. The new youth of the time had a fraction of the energy of their former peers, and music once again reflected that. Now corporate heads controlled the direction of music more and more and they turned it into a profit/ fad driven money-maker. All of the really good music began to fade away slowly, with no youthful drive to push it forward to new heights. Any demand that was left for the remaining really good music was driven underground or just withered on the vine. Now there are only a few acts from the glory days still hanging on for dear life as they slide into their 70's. What we're now left with is unimaginative, corporate manufactured, commercial sh*t. Most kids, not all thankfully, are clueless about how truly amazing music was a mere 45-55 years ago. The only ones that are aware of what I'll call "our music" only discover it accidentally on youtube or found out via their parents or clued in friends. The only thing that gives me hope for a reemergence of really good music again is the fact that I see comments from kids as young as 16 on youtube and they recognize the quality of what we took for granted in our youth. They wish they had been around to experience what we experienced and they have a genuine disdain for the crap that's force fed to them on a daily basis. What is needed now is a catalyst to create a strong desire for good, original and talented musicians to come forth and reignite the passion for #TrueMusic. I, for one, have faith that that day will come again! 💥🎶🎷🎸 Sorry for what turned out to be a mini-novel, but I guess I had to let that be expressed! 😂👊 Take care and I guess this day will be a rough one, coz I did not sleep a wink all night! Peace, brotha! Stay safe & God bless you and yours!

@@KoolHandJuke You nailed it! I was born in '55 and in the 60s music was not only something to listen to, it was an emotion to be felt. To misquote Marshal Mcluhan, "Music was the message". One thing I might add to what was said above...most of us who rebelled against the structures of society back then, became the CEOs, CFOs, COOs of the very thing we rebelled against!

Yes, it's Rusty Day singing, it's the original Cactus Band, with Rusty, Jim McCarty, Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice. Tunes into "Fully Unleashed" are from gigs at the Isle Of Wight (70), New-York (71) and Memphis (71). Cactus was "the US Led Zep", and for me, Jim, one of the better guitarists I ever listened, and he's still at the top !

Jim rates right up there with Clapton, Beck, and Page; sometimes looking down at them. Crank it and blow, old school. Every lick he plays is brilliant; you can't talk about his "tone" because he changes it from one killer to the next every 4 bars or so. Just one of the most soulful players ever; you feel him as much as listen. This is what young players should be shooting for. Don't try to impress me with your playing, just tell me a good story.
