The first drill instructor was one of my DIs, sergeant Borjon, he was fresh from drill instructor school and came to our platoon in the second month...sorry to say but he was the weak link, his voice wasn’t loud, he wasn’t intimidating at all, he’d get super gassed out on our humps, I have respect for the guy but it was hard to take him serious throughout boot camp.

Dunno how it works in JROTC, to be precise those are ribbons which CAN represent medals, but sometimes a ribbon is just a ribbon. They have more than I got in four years active duty AF...I had four, two medals, two ribbons, plus a badge. And I had more than a lot of my peers.

I live in the UK and our ATC used to be paired with an American base. Every so often an American Liaison Officer would come down and he had ribbons coming out of his ears. JROTC ribbons and medals are only relevant to JROTC, not the real military. That's why they have so many. When I was in JROTC I had ribbons/medals for shit like attendance, good grades, for participating in a school parade. None of them carry over to the real military.
@philipem1000

Excessive barking or not, it's his job to do that. He is a Drill INSPECTOR. He has the right to inspect the detail as he sees fit. Unless you guys have experience in a good Drill Inspection then don't comment. I bet you these cadets went home and studied their knowledge to the best of their ability and pressed their uniform to a T after this inspection. Besides, they're supposed to: "Improve my Mind and Strengthen my Body" It's something any cadet should do .

Okay.. for one. Marines in general have a stigma that we just absolutely love to purpetuate. 2. Its an inspection... the definition of an inspection is to check the person to make sure that all aspects of their uniform, weapon system, personal hygien, and knowledge is up to date and within regulation. When I was in Army JROTC I used to rune weekly uniform inspections. So I dont think its a hard concept to grasp.

1976 Ft Dix. Our DI’s did not scream, curse us, or curse at us. All Combat Inf vets, they trained us hard with a quiet intensity more profound than any screaming would have been. They carried themselves with a dignity that commanded our respect and caused us to respect each other. Instead of yelling; they made us LISTEN. Believe me or not. Read Sun Tzu. Read Musashi. Read the story of Gideon. Lord Thomas Dewar - "Minds are like parachutes: they only function when open."

I think a drill is nessecary but if they are trying to teach something the screaming is not the way to do it. I never raised my voice in 22 years army (except on parade ofcource.) and got the boys to do what I wanted them to do.

They're not teaching. They're creating stress so that recruits or these particular cadets react as its second nature. Imprinted in their brain if you will. When you create stress commands and responses are second nature then.

At the MC jrotc inspection in my school we had to say sir. When the sergeant asked us a question we had to start of with sir and end with it. If we weren't loud enough they would make us repeat it. We didn't get yelled at as long as we kept it together.

Extrodius How is it BS? explain to me. DI''s do this to Marine recruits to stress them out and prepare them for the reality of war or at least come as close as possible to reality since war can't really be reproduced to train. These kinds of inspectors aren't too common but my unit still prepares for these. During inspection when the DI's yell, It helps them see how well prepared the cadets are.

TrueWW2History Reality of the war is to repeatedly yell at the enemy? My country went through the war reacently and this won't prepare you for that. This seems to be mental institution preparations rather than war. This doesn't seem to upgrade physical or mental fitness. Doesn't teach you tactics, formations or weapon usage. So how exactly does it help in war or help DI's figur out how well is someone prepared? Please explain

Lemme criticize(constructive). You go to port arms if you’re gonna march with a rifle. It looked like they were walking not marching. The platoon commander obviously doesn’t know the angle the rifle should be in during present arms(the rifle is leaning forward too much). His rifle movements are fast(in a bad way) and aren’t precise and sharp. When the platoon commander is at port arms, the rifle is too far away from his body, the rifle should be a fist away from him, not an arm length away.
